Unlike most adults, I play videogames professionally with children online all day, every day. I play the games children love, such as Roblox and Fortnite, many of which parents are not interested in - either giving their children total freedom with them or banning them entirely. I will immerse adults in my world for 30 minutes and give them confidence in navigating parenting in this modern age. In this talk I will help caregivers to feel more confident in setting boundaries and limits for their child’s online gaming, by explaining the main sources of harm in some popular platforms. I give tips on how to discuss boundaries with children (especially when 'everyone in my class plays it!'), as well as describe ways I have seen children get around restrictions. I will share the games I will and will not let my own children play - and you may be surprised as to why. I will describe how I try to keep them as safe as possible online, while maintaining friendships. Young people are very welcome to attend alongside their caregivers to spark the discussion moving forward. Guys, listen. I know Windows 11 is extra awful, even by Windows standards. I know you love gaming and you've got a nice rig. I know you bought a big fat nvidia card for your system. Tons of RAM before prices went crazy. Twin Optane SSDs that cost you three years of holiday gift money from your family as well as your last three checks from the retail store you work at part time while you go to college.

I get it; I used to BE you.

You can, if you want, switch to Linux. It's free, and supposedly it makes you a hacker or something. But I promise you your games are gonna run like shit. Your monitors aren't gonna work sometimes. Your seven-speaker headphones are gonna sound like broken glass. That nvidia card is gonna paint each frame like an episode of Bob Ross. (Watch him on YouTube, so soothing.)

It is absolutely possible to make all this work. If you're an engineer with years of experience and/or a curious person who is really dedicated to making something work on a system that isn't really supported for it.

If you're either of those people, feel free to post in r/linux about your trials and travails. War stories about how you fixed a crappy track pad with a custom driver are some of my favorites.

If you're mad that you tried Linux and expected it to be your drop-in Windows streaming rig that's gonna make you rich and famous playing Fortnite, please don't rant about it here; we already know it wasn't gonna work out for you, and no amount of "try cachyOS it's the best" is going to give you what you want.

Do you kids still play Fortnite? Whatever.

It has been a strange decade for the rhythm game genre. The legendary progenitors Rock Band and Guitar Hero are seemingly gone, yet companies are manufacturing plastic guitars again. Tango Gameworks, a studio best known for delivering survival horror hauntings, made Hi-Fi Rush and it ruled, but Microsoft sold the studio. Indie titles such as Sayonara Wild Hearts and Rift of the NecroDancer have done well on the margins, but now Epic Games has swept in, adding a rhythm action mode to Fortnite so now its mainstream again. All these titles have reinforced the ideas laid out by their forefathers: rhythm can intersect with video games as much as it already intersects with our everyday lives.

Few series hold this ethos to heart as strongly as Rhythm Heaven. Dormant since 2015, a new entry, Rhythm Heaven Groove (known as Rhythm Paradise Groove in Pal territories), doubles down on the concept of offering bitesize, rhythm-based experiences where you follow auditive cues to perform all manner of increasingly exhilarating actions with just a few buttons. Supreme Court Steps Into Apple And Epic Games App Store Fight

The United States Supreme Court is officially stepping into the long running legal battle between Apple and Epic Games. The highest court recently agreed to hear a new appeal regarding a previous contempt ruling against the tech giant. This high stakes dispute focuses entirely on the commission fees developers must pay to sell their digital products and games directly to consumers outside the official App Store payment system. The justices will decide if the commission's rules were broken Back in 2021, a lower court judge ordered the iPhone maker to let app developers link users to outside payment options. The company allowed these links but introduced a 27 percent commission on purchases made through them. The creator of Fortnite argued that this new fee made the outside links practically useless. In early 2025, a judge ruled the tech company acted in contempt because it violated the spirit of the original order. The judge demanded the company stop charging the fee entirely. An appeals court upheld this contempt finding late last year. Now, the smartphone maker is asking the Supreme Court to review the ruling. It argues that courts should only punish companies for breaking the exact written text of an order, not just the spirit of it. The justices will hear the arguments during the upcoming October term. A final decision on how the platform handles these developer payments is expected by the summer of 2027. The outcome of this case will set a major legal standard for the entire technology industry. It will ultimately decide exactly how much control a platform owner can keep over outside purchases made by its users.

Apple is getting its wish in the ongoing lawsuit against Epic Games, as the Supreme Court agrees to hear its argument against being found in contempt of court.

Apple and Epic Games have been impatiently waiting for the Supreme Court to determine whether it will listen to arguments between the two companies. On Tuesday, the answer finally came.

Reuters reports the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear Apple's argument that lower courts had made mistakes in two areas of the case. If the Supreme Court agrees, it could have implications that bring the lawsuit more into Apple's favor.

Ein Medienkunstmuseum besteht nicht aus Bildern an der Wand, sondern aus Projektoren, Rechnern, Sensoren, Servomotoren, Druckluft, Hochspannung und gelegentlich einer VM mit Windows XP. Vieles davon läuft 24/7 — never touch a running system. Anderes muss jeden Morgen pünktlich hochfahren und abends wieder runter. Wir erzählen, wie wir am ZKM den Alltag eines solchen Hauses am Laufen halten — und warum dabei über die Jahre eine ganze Werkstatt voll eigener Software entstanden ist. Das ZKM in Karlsruhe ist ein Haus für lebende Medienkunst — Werke aus Code, Hardware, Netzwerken und manchmal aus Druckluft. Projektoren an der Decke, Rechner hinter den Wänden, Windows-XP-VMs für Netzkunst von 2001, eine Jakobsleiter mit Hochspannung, ein Emulator des CM-2-Supercomputers mit einer LED-Wand als Replica. Wikipedia Cofounder Larry Sanger Banned From Site for 'Canvassing'

Wikipedia cofounder Larry Sanger has been indefinitely banned from editing the site after editors concluded that he violated its canvassing rules, "or in other words, calling on his followers off platform in order to influence Wikipedia's content," reports 404 Media. Sanger says the ban proves Wikipedia suppresses ideological diversity, while editors argue he was trying to mobilize an outside audience to influence internal decisions and had ignored an earlier warning. From the report: The discussion that led to the decision to ban Sanger concluded with what an editor called a "clear consensus" to ban Sanger. "There is general agreement among participants that he has engaged in off-wiki canvassing and is not here to constructively build the encyclopedia," the editor said in a note closing the discussion. "There is also a significant concern shared by many editors that his actions constitute calls for outing." While Sanger has been railing about bias on Wikipedia for years, the specific issue here is around his WikiProject Intellectual Diversity. WikiProjects are group efforts among Wikipedia volunteers to deal with certain issues on the site. [...] Sanger's WikiProject Intellectual Diversity, as its name implies, aims to bring more intellectual diversity to the site, mostly meaning more right-leaning perspectives. While consensus that Sanger had violated Wikipedia policies was clear, Sanger was banned at some point before that deadline. He was then briefly unbanned, and then again indefinitely banned once 72 hours had elapsed and the discussion about the ban closed. "Wikipedia has become more of a mob-rule anarchy than ever," Sanger said in a statement sent to me by a spokesperson. "In the kangaroo court in which a mob ousted me, Wikipedia's administrators showed that they don't appear to value details like formal charges, a designated prosecutor, basic decorum, distinction between prosecution and judge, dispassionate adjudication, and so forth. They have no proper system other than triggering a mob to selectively enforce their hodgepodge of vague rules." "Now that same mob has blocked me for trying to bring an intellectually diverse group of thinkers and editors to the site," Sanger continued. "Subscribing to their groupthink is now an official requirement of being a member in good standing. Something must change, and now. Fazit

Das Honor 600 punktet mit einer guten Hauptkamera, langer Akkulaufzeit und einem hellen Display. Insgesamt hinterlässt das Smartphone einen starken Eindruck, auch weil es sich optisch und bei einigen Funktionen deutlich an Apples iPhone orientiert. Ob das stört oder gefällt, hängt letztlich von Ihrem persönlichen Geschmack ab.

Das Honor 600, ein neues Mittelklasse-Smartphone des ehemaligen Huawei-Ablegers, könnte man auf den ersten Blick fast mit einem iPhone verwechseln. Dafür sorgen vor allem das riesige Kameramodul auf der Rückseite sowie Software-Effekte und Tiefenunschärfen, die stark an Apples iOS 26 erinnern.

Preislich spielt das Gerät allerdings nicht in der Oberklasse, sondern konkurriert eher mit Mittelklassemodellen von Samsung und Google. Im Test schlägt es sich sehr gut. Das Display überzeugt ebenso wie die leistungsfähige Kamera, die lange Akkulaufzeit und die flüssige Performance im Alltag.

Zwar ist das Honor 600 nicht frei von Schwächen, wer jedoch ein Android-Smartphone mit deutlicher iPhone-Anmutung sucht, wird hier fündig.

Design & Verarbeitung

Am Design des Honor 600 gibt es kaum etwas auszusetzen. Mit einem Gewicht von 185 Gramm, also ungefähr auf dem Niveau des iPhone 15 Pro, liegt das Smartphone angenehm in der Hand. Die gold-weiße Farbvariante unseres Testgeräts vermittelt zudem einen hochwertigen Eindruck.

Die auffälligste Neuerung ist eine eigene KI-Taste unterhalb der Lautstärke- und Power-Tasten auf der rechten Seite. Auch hier sind die Parallelen zum iPhone kaum zu übersehen, allerdings setzt Honor die Lösung praktischer um und verzichtet auf umständliche kapazitive Zusatzfunktionen. Honor hätte die Taste allerdings etwas höher platzieren können. Im aktuellen Layout wirkt ihre Position unergonomisch. Lautstärketasten auf der linken Seite wären sinnvoller gewesen.

Ansonsten hinterlässt das Gehäuse einen hochwertigen Eindruck. Die Rückseite besteht aus einem leicht transparenten Fasermaterial, während der Rahmen mit einer matten Metalloptik versehen ist. Dazu kommen IP68-, IP69- und IP69K-Zertifizierungen, wodurch das Smartphone gut gegen Wasser und Staub geschützt ist. Angeboten wird das Honor 600 in Schwarz, Gold-Weiß sowie Orange.

Bildschirm & Lautsprecher

Das Honor 600 punktet mit einem starken AMOLED-Display. Das 6,57 Zoll große Panel überzeugt mit kräftigen Farben und hoher Helligkeit. Selbst feine Details und Gesichtsausdrücke in dunkleren Szenen werden sauber dargestellt. Hauttöne wirken natürlich und auch Kontraste kommen gut zur Geltung, was sich besonders beim Streaming von Serien und Filmen bemerkbar macht.

Helle Bildbereiche stellt das Honor 600 ausgewogen dar, während dunkle Szenen genügend Tiefe behalten, ohne dass Details verloren gehen. Farben wirken allerdings stellenweise etwas zu kräftig. Das fällt im Alltag aber kaum störend auf. Insgesamt hinterlässt das Display einen überzeugenden Eindruck, nicht zuletzt dank der hohen Auflösung von 2.728 × 1.264 Pixeln und der flüssigen Bildwiederholrate von 120 Hertz. Mit einer Spitzenhelligkeit von bis zu 8.000 Nits bleibt das Display selbst bei direkter Sonneneinstrahlung sehr gut ablesbar.

Die Lautsprecher liefern eine solide Leistung. Vor allem Mitten werden sauber wiedergegeben und höhere Töne klingen angenehm klar. Schnelle Schlagzeugpassagen setzt das Honor 600 überraschend dynamisch um. Wie bei vielen Smartphones dieser Preisklasse fehlt es allerdings etwas an kräftigem Bass, wodurch die Musikwiedergabe insgesamt nicht ganz so voll wirkt.

Ausstattung & Rechenleistung

Im Gehäuse werkelt Qualcomms Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. Unser Testgerät war mit 8 Gigabyte RAM und 512 Gigabyte Speicher ausgestattet. Alternativ bietet Honor das Smartphone auch mit 256 Gigabyte Speicher an.

Im Alltag liefert das Honor 600 eine überzeugende Leistung. Der Wechsel zwischen Social Media, E-Mails, Messenger-Apps und Streaming-Diensten erfolgt schnell und ohne spürbare Verzögerungen. Selbst bei vielen gleichzeitig geöffneten Apps bleibt das System flüssig und reagiert unmittelbar auf Eingaben.

Auch bei Spielen schlägt sich das Honor 600 ordentlich. Titel wie “Fortnite” laufen problemlos und selbst grafisch anspruchsvollere Games wie “Genshin Impact” werden sauber dargestellt. Zwar bieten teurere Flaggschiff-Smartphones mit stärkerer Hardware noch etwas mehr Leistungsreserven, in dieser Preisklasse gibt es bei der Performance aber nur wenig zu kritisieren.

Honor 600 Benchmarks

Kameras

Honor hat dem Kamerasystem viel Platz eingeräumt. Der 200-Megapixel-Hauptsensor liefert eine beeindruckende Detailwiedergabe. Selbst feine Strukturen, etwa die leicht gewellten Oberflächen von Blütenblättern, werden sauber erfasst. Dafür müssen Sie weder manuell Einstellungen anpassen noch spezielle Hochauflösungsmodi aktivieren, wie es bei anderen Geräten oft der Fall ist.

Auch der maximale 30-fache Zoom fällt überraschend positiv auf. Während viele Mittelklasse-Android-Smartphones in diesem Bereich schnell nur noch verwaschene Ergebnisse liefern, bleibt die Qualität der Honor-600-Fotos erstaunlich gut.

Selbst Motive in größerer Entfernung, etwa Flugzeuge am Himmel oder Vögel in Baumkronen, werden noch ausreichend klar abgebildet.

Im Vergleich zu anderen Android-Smartphones setzt das Honor 600 auf eine eher kühle Farbabstimmung. Das sorgt für einen neutral wirkenden Bildeindruck, wie er häufig bei Geräten aus dem chinesischen Markt zu finden ist, nimmt den Fotos aber auch etwas Charakter.

Die Kamera ist allerdings nicht frei von Eigenheiten. Bei kleinen Motiven arbeitet der Autofokus zwar grundsätzlich ordentlich, kann aber etwas träge reagieren. Versuche, etwa eine kleine Raupe auf dem Finger zu fotografieren, gestalten sich schwieriger als nötig, da der Fokus bei jeder Bewegung neu justiert wird.

Die zweite Kamera auf der Rückseite ist ein einfacher 12-Megapixel-Ultraweitwinkelsensor. Entsprechend werden Sie in der Praxis wahrscheinlich überwiegend mit der Hauptkamera fotografieren. Die 50-Megapixel-Frontkamera liefert helle und detailreiche Selfies und gibt kaum Anlass zur Kritik.

Für Zoom-Aufnahmen jenseits der sechsfachen Vergrößerung bietet Honor einen KI-Modus. Dieser kann allerdings nur begrenzt zusätzliche Details herausarbeiten und lässt sich in der Kamera-App nicht manuell deaktivieren. Das ist im Alltag eher unpraktisch.

Akkulaufzeit & Aufladen

Mit seinem 6.400-Milliamperestunden-Akku zeigt das Honor 600 eine starke Ausdauer im Alltag. Im normalen Gebrauch reicht eine Akkuladung in der Regel problemlos für bis zu zwei Tage.

Das Honor 600 unterstützt kabelgebundenes Laden mit bis zu 80 Watt, ein Netzteil liegt jedoch nicht bei. Im Test mit einem adaptiven Huawei-Ladegerät und dem mitgelieferten USB-C-Kabel erreichte das Gerät nach 15 Minuten 34 Prozent und nach 30 Minuten 63 Prozent Ladestand. Das ist solide.

In China ist das Smartphone mit einem 7.000-Milliamperestunden-Akku erhältlich, während die EU-Version aus regulatorischen Gründen eine geringere Kapazität bietet. Auf kabelloses Laden verzichtet Honor in Europa ebenfalls. Das ist in dieser Preisklasse eine verpasste Chance.

Benutzeroberfläche & Apps

Das Honor 600 läuft mit MagicOS 10, Honors eigener Oberfläche auf Basis von Android 16. Neben den Google-Standard-Apps bringt das Smartphone eigene Anwendungen mit, darunter Health, Kalender und Galerie. Optisch und bei der Bedienung erinnert das System deutlich an iOS. Benachrichtigungen öffnen Sie durch Wischen auf der linken Seite des Displays, das Kontrollzentrum auf der rechten.

Die Software wirkt modern und flott. Die große Auswahl an Bloatware-Apps ist jedoch ärgerlich.

Der Schwerpunkt der Software liegt klar auf den KI-Funktionen. Viele davon finden sich in der Galerie-App, etwa ein KI-Radierer, ein Upscaler, ein Freistellungswerkzeug sowie eine Funktion zum Erweitern von Bildern durch sogenanntes Outpainting.

Insgesamt arbeitet das System hier solide, allerdings steigt mit der Komplexität der Aufgaben auch die Fehleranfälligkeit der KI. In manchen Fällen entstehen dabei unnatürliche Ergebnisse, etwa wenn ein Holzpfosten unnatürlich mit der Felswand im Hintergrund verschmilzt.

Daneben gibt es “AI Memories”. Damit können Sie Inhalte vom Homescreen als Screenshot erfassen und später leichter durchsuchen. Zusätzlich liefert das System KI-basierte Vorschläge auf dem Bildschirm, die je nach App Kontextaktionen anbieten, etwa das Erstellen von Textentwürfen in Gmail oder das Umwandeln eines Bildes in ein Video, sobald die Galerie geöffnet wird.

Auch Booking.com ist hier eingebunden und bietet einen KI-Reiseplaner, der Urlaube auf Basis von Eingaben erstellt. Im Test funktionierte das grundsätzlich gut, allerdings bleiben die Möglichkeiten eingeschränkt. Zwar können Sie über die Booking.com-App Flüge suchen, im KI-Planer selbst können sie jedoch nicht ausgewählt werden. Auch eine direkte Buchung der gefundenen Hotels ist nicht möglich.

Positiv ist die Entscheidung von Honor, die Funktionen der KI-Taste frei konfigurierbar zu machen. In der Praxis fiel es mir jedoch schwer, einen echten Mehrwert für alle Features zu finden. Einige Funktionen, etwa die KI-gestützte Videoerstellung, benötigen zudem sehr viel Zeit.

Das Honor 600 soll in Europa zudem sechs Jahre lang Android-Updates und Sicherheits-Patches erhalten. Ebenfalls sinnvoll ist die KI-basierte Erkennung von Deepfakes und geklonten Stimmen, die potenziell vor Betrugsversuchen schützen kann.

Preis & Verfügbarkeit

Das Honor 600 ist aktuell in einer exklusiven Vorverkaufsphase direkt bei Honor sowie unter anderem bei MediaMarkt und Saturn erhältlich. Die Version mit 256 Gigabyte Speicher kostet bei Saturn 499 Euro. Die 512-Gigabyte-Variante ist exklusiv im Honor-Online-Shop für 649,90 Euro erhältlich. Bei Amazon ist das Smartphones voraussichtlich ab 1. Juni 2026 erhältlich.

Zur Konkurrenz in der Mittelklasse zählen unter anderem das Samsung Galaxy S25 FE, das Nothing Phone (4a) Pro, das OnePlus 15R, das Google Pixel 10a sowie das Xiaomi 15T Pro.

Fazit

Trotz des vergleichsweise günstigen Preises hat das Honor 600 einiges zu bieten. Die Kamera fängt viele Details ein, der Akku hält problemlos ein ganzes Wochenende durch, und das helle Display ist auch unter schwierigen Lichtbedingungen noch gut ablesbar.

Einige Schwächen gibt es dennoch, etwa bei den KI-Funktionen, die noch nicht ganz ausgereift wirken. Auch anspruchsvolle Mobile-Gamer werden sich etwas mehr Prozessorleistung wünschen. Insgesamt gibt es aber nur wenig Minuspunkte.

Wer ein Smartphone sucht, das sich im Kern wie ein iPhone anfühlt, aber mit Android läuft, ist hier ausgezeichnet aufgehoben.

The ongoing, never-ending tennis match between Apple and Epic Games continues with another legal filing. On June 4, 2026, Epic Games demanded that Apple's appeal over this ceaseless case be thrown out.

Now Apple has filed its response which, unsurprisingly, defends its right to appeal. In a 12-page filing, Apple lawyers aim to take down each of Epic's arguments and demonstrate how it "confirms the need for review." The short version of Apple's response to Epic's 35-page filing, boils down to the same two key issues that Epic has tried to describe as too unimportant to warrant the appeal.

Ein Medienkunstmuseum besteht nicht aus Bildern an der Wand, sondern aus Projektoren, Rechnern, Sensoren, Servomotoren, Druckluft, Hochspannung und gelegentlich einer VM mit Windows XP. Vieles davon läuft 24/7 — never touch a running system. Anderes muss jeden Morgen pünktlich hochfahren und abends wieder runter. Wir erzählen, wie wir am ZKM den Alltag eines solchen Hauses am Laufen halten — und warum dabei über die Jahre eine ganze Werkstatt voll eigener Software entstanden ist.

Das ZKM in Karlsruhe ist ein Haus für lebende Medienkunst — Werke aus Code, Hardware, Netzwerken und manchmal aus Druckluft. Projektoren an der Decke, Rechner hinter den Wänden, Windows-XP-VMs für Netzkunst von 2001, eine Jakobsleiter mit Hochspannung, ein Emulator des CM-2-Supercomputers mit einer LED-Wand als Replica.

Niemand verkauft Software für „Steuere Projektoren von fünf Herstellern, davon einer ohne Netzwerkanschluss". Niemand verkauft ein System für „starte ein Kunstwerk, das sich nur per Mausklick auf einen Button starten lässt". Also bauen wir es selbst — fast immer als Antwort auf einen Bedarf aus einer Ausstellung.

Der Talk zeigt, wie das im Alltag aussieht:

- Was muss eigentlich gesteuert werden? Strom, Geräte, Rechner, Kioske, Tracking, Besucher — sechs Schichten, jede mit eigenen Protokollen, Macken und Failure-Modes.

- Welche Probleme kommen immer wieder? Kunstwerke, die nicht starten wollen. Kunstwerke, die nicht aufhören wollen. Alte Kunst auf neuer Hardware. Schulklassen, die ALLES anfassen. Projektoren, die offline gehen. Ausstellungen, die jahrelang täglich laufen müssen.

- Welche Lösungen entstehen daraus? Watchdogs, VMs mit Snapshot-Revert, ESP-Module die alte Fernbedienungen ersetzen, DNS-Filterung gegen Fortnite-Downloads, ein zentrales Kontrollsystem, das alles orchestriert.

- Was davon ist Open Source und kann auch anderen Häusern helfen? Einiges. Aus Hacks für einzelne Ausstellungen sind über die Jahre wiederverwendbare Werkzeuge geworden.

- Was haben wir auf dem Weg gelernt — über Architektur, über Künstler:innen, über das Publikum, und über Skripte, die „nur kurz" laufen sollten und dann jahrelang in Produktion stehen.

Ein Blick aus der Maschinenraum-Perspektive auf den Alltag der Leute, die dafür sorgen, dass das Museum jeden Tag wieder funktioniert.

The Apple versus Epic saga continues with yet another filing, this time from Epic. Even as the company prematurely celebrates its supposed victory, it has filed a strong attempt at convincing the Supreme Court to throw it all out.

Basically, Apple says that the lower courts have flubbed two important aspects of the case. First, the anti-steering injunction exceeds the scope of the case and, second, violating the "spirit" of the law is not how the court of law should determine injunction violations.

Ebenso wichtig wie die Bildschirmauflösung sind die Spiele, die Sie bevorzugen. Bei kompetitiven Titeln wie Counter-Strike 2 und Fortnite sind hohe Bildwiederholraten wichtiger als bestmögliche Grafikqualität. Oft reduzieren Spieler hier die Auflösung zugunsten der Bildrate.

Bevorzugen Sie hingegen Action-Adventures und Rollenspiele, liegt Ihr Fokus wahrscheinlich eher auf der Bildqualität. Dazu gehören nicht nur hübsche, hoch aufgelöste Texturen, sondern auch eine wirklichkeitsnahe Beleuchtung und realistische, dynamische Schatten.

Diese Aufgabe übernehmen bei modernen Grafikkarten zunehmend die Raytracing-Recheneinheiten. Wer hier seinen spielerischen Schwerpunkt setzt, sollte zu Karten aus der 5000er-Serie von Nvidia respektive zur 9000er-Baureihe von AMD greifen und etwas mehr Puffer einplanen, denn Raytracing ist ein Leistungsfresser. Dafür unterstützen aktuell über 370 Titel Raytracing.

Allerdings kann eine zu langsame CPU die Grafikkarte daran hindern, ihre maximal mögliche Leistung auszuspielen. Eine CPU-Limitierung kann etwa bei Simulationen wie der Anno-Reihe, RPGs wie Baldur’s Gate 3 und Open-World-Titeln wie Kingdom Come: Deliverance II auftreten. Die maximale HDR-Helligkeit des MPG OLED 322URDX36 erreicht bis zu 1.500 Nits und erfüllt damit die begehrten Zertifizierungen VESA DisplayHDR True Black 600 und ClearMR 18000.

Um die Gefahr des Einbrennens von Pixeln zu minimieren, integriert MSI im 322URDX36 einen AI-Care-Sensor, der durch präzise Personenerkennung das OLED-Panel schützt, ohne Ihre Privatsphäre zu beeinträchtigen.

In the Supreme Court filing viewed by AppleInsider, Apple shares that the scope of the anti-steering injunction exceeds the District Court's limits set by CASA. If you play Fortnite on your iPhone, you can finally download it again in almost every country. Epic Games has brought its massive hit game back to the global App Store today, except in Australia. The game maker claims it is entering the final stage of its long legal fight with Apple. Epic decided to return now because it believes courts will soon force the iPhone maker to explain its fees. Epic expects courts to stop the current app store fees Epic boss Tim Sweeney shared that this move marks the beginning of the end for the fees that Apple charges developers. For years, the two sides have fought over how much money Apple takes from purchases made inside apps on iOS. Sweeney believes that once the courts force Apple to reveal its actual costs to run the store, governments everywhere will step in to stop these charges. The game maker decided to skip releasing the game in Australia for now. Epic says it already won a court case there, but Apple continues to use rules that the local court called unlawful. Epic refuses to bring the game back there until Apple changes its payment terms. Epic plans to keep fighting until it feels the rules are fair for all app creators and players. The company wants to make sure digital stores offer real choices for payments. By pushing the game back out to the world, Epic hopes to force regulators to make permanent changes to the mobile app market.

The Apple vs Epic case could go down as one of the more convoluted cases Apple has ever faced. The back and forth that has taken place since Epic first filed a lawsuit in 2020 will take you at least two hours to read through.

In a new filing viewed by AppleInsider, Apple has requested a stay on the mandate that would require it to reconvene with Epic in court and decide upon a new App Store commission for external purchases. It was previously granted a stay by the Circuit Court, but that stay was overturned after a complaint from Epic.

Costumed Crowd 'Speedruns' Scientology Building For Social Media Trend

Last Saturday someone dressed as Jesus "was among the dozens of people in costumes and masks seen on a video forcing open the door of a Scientology building on Hollywood Boulevard," reports the Los Angeles Times, "after a tug-of-war with a security guard." The footage posted on TikTok and Instagram shows the group sprinting up and down stairs and clashing with black-shirted security guards, giggling and gasping to catch their breath while church members scream at them to leave. On their way out — as security guards approach armed with fire extinguishers — one of the sprinters stops and dances to celebrate their successful escape, a move reminiscent of a taunt from the video game Fortnite. For weeks, groups of people have barged into two of the church's Hollywood properties, racing through hallways and tussling with security guards, trying to see how far they can get before they are forced to leave by church staff... Church officials say the incidents are not a game and have accused the speed runners of "hate crimes." After dozens on Saturday stormed the Ivar Avenue building that houses an exhibit dedicated to the church's founder, science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, the external door handles were removed from all three of Scientology's properties on Hollywood Boulevard by Sunday morning. Guards could be seen blocking the doorway to one building on Monday afternoon... No arrests have been made. A report from the Associated Press cites a joke left on one of the videos: that if runners reach the top of the building, they'll find Tom Cruise. One commenter on a recent TikTok video of a speedrun asked why people are doing this, and another user simply replied, "because it's fun." The 18-year-old who started the trend told the Hollywood Reporter his original video has been viewed over 100 million times. "From there on out, I pretty much knew that Scientology was like a free gateway to a lot of views." Epic Games has officially brought Fortnite back to the iPhone in Japan, marking another major step in its global fight against Apple’s App Store restrictions while expanding the Epic Games Store on iOS. Japanese iPhone users can now directly download the Epic Games Store and access Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys, although iPad support remains unavailable in the region for now. Student Watches 13,000 YouTube Shorts During School Hours

A seventh-grade student recently set a shocking record for digital distraction by watching thousands of YouTube videos during his regular classes. The middle schooler managed to rack up an unbelievable 13,000 video views on his school device in just a three-month window. This extreme case highlights a growing problem with how educational tablets are managed in classrooms. It also shows why parents are demanding stricter limits on what kids can access while sitting at their desks. The student swipes through endless gaming videos using school equipment Ben Warren, a seventh grader in Wichita, Kansas, logged the massive view count between December 2024 and February 2025. Instead of using his school iPad for learning, he spent his days swiping through short gaming clips. He primarily watched content about Fortnite, a popular video game that his parents explicitly not allowed him from playing at home. By taking advantage of the school network, he easily bypassed those home restrictions. Math shows he averaged around 144 short videos every single day during that heavy viewing period. His mother, Amy Warren, recently joined the local Board of Education and is now fighting to implement stronger controls on devices running software from Google and other tech partners in the district. Other teenagers face similar struggles with extreme video viewing habits Warren is certainly not the only student battling these digital distractions during class time. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, an anonymous tenth grader in Oregon managed to watch 200 videos in a single morning. The situation gets even worse for some students who simply cannot put their screens down. Another teenager reportedly watched four straight hours of videos in one day during school hours. That specific case became so severe that the student had to enter a professional addiction treatment program at a children's hospital to break the habit. These alarming numbers show that schools need better systems to block addictive entertainment apps on devices meant strictly for studying.

Valve Steam Controller review: A gamepad in search of a console

Don’t mistake the Steam Controller for a PC controller. Even though its main function is to play PC games, Valve’s new gamepad communicates with Steam, and only Steam. This is not a general controller for your PC, Android or iOS devices, and it’s certainly not compatible with any console on the market today, unless you count the handheld Steam Deck. In order to play a game with the Steam Controller, you have to boot it up through Steam. (More on this later).

Valve’s end goal for the Steam Controller is compatibility with the Steam Machine, a console that doesn’t yet have a public release date or price point. The Steam Machine will support 4K gaming at 60 fps with FSR, it’ll come with 512GB or 2TB of SSD storage, and it’ll work with the Steam Frame VR headset, as will the Controller. The new Steam Machine was supposed to drop early this year, fulfilling a long-promised dream of PC gaming by moving your entire Steam library to the couch in a compact but powerful box. Due to the memory shortages plaguing the tech industry, the Machine and Frame aren't here yet, so the Steam Controller is the first step in Valve’s hardware takeover of living room territory. It’s due to come out on May 4, priced at $99.

The Steam Controller represents roughly 13 years of R&D, from its first iteration announced in 2013 to the debut of the Steam Deck in 2022, and the refinement period clearly paid off.

The Steam Controller is a tidy chonker of a gamepad with a broad, Duke-like face holding two square trackpads beneath the standard analog sticks and face buttons. Despite its extra girth, the Steam Controller feels light, slim and balanced, even in my smaller-than-average hands. The grips are slender and have four circular rear buttons, two per side, that are super satisfying to click even when they don’t do anything in-game. The bumpers, triggers, D-pad and face buttons are shiny black plastic, and all of the controller’s edges are rounded, allowing for a smooth glide between the bumpers and triggers especially. The trackpads don’t get in the way when you don’t need them, but in-use, they’re incredibly sensitive and kind of mesmerizing. They look and feel just like the trackpads on the Steam Deck, following the trails of your thumbs with miniature popping bubbles.

The Steam Controller uses tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) joysticks, which are a leveled-up version of Hall effect sticks, offering ultimate precision and long-term stability with no chance of drift. After a few days of use across a range of game genres, including competitive first-person shooters, they’ve proven to be reliable and accurate. In terms of stick precision and feel, I find the Steam Controller is comparable to the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro, my PC gamepad of choice. I otherwise much prefer the swappability, rubberized microswitches and crisp clickiness of Razer’s gamepad — but the Wolverine also costs about $100 more and doesn’t come with trackpad capabilities, so we’ll call it a wash.

One of the neatest aspects of the Steam Controller is its charging and connection puck, which plugs into your PC or Steam Deck through a USB cable and enables stable wireless play. The puck snaps onto the belly of the controller for charging, and when you hover the gamepad’s connection point over it, it jumps up and latches on like a cute little sucker fish. I don’t know if this behavior is an intentional selling point, but it certainly is for me. The Steam Controller also connects to devices via Bluetooth or with a cable, and in all configurations it’s performed without issue for me. Of course, Bluetooth mode has the highest latency, so that’s mainly for phones and Steam Link play. The puck can support two Steam Controllers at once. Swapping between Puck and Bluetooth mode is a simple matter of holding the right bumper and A or B, respectively, when you turn the controller on.

Pressing the power button with the Steam logo wakes up the gamepad, and pressing it twice when you’re connected to a PC launches Steam in Big Picture mode. The Steam Controller feels like a natural extension of Valve’s storefront, and with its matte black finish and bubbled edges, it’ll be familiar to anyone who’s fallen in love with a Steam Deck these past few years.

I tested out the controller on my PC with Steam games and non-Steam games (added to my Steam library first, of course — seriously, more on that later), and in my living room with my Steam Deck acting as a makeshift, low-powered Steam Machine. On PC I played The Seance of Blake Manor, Creature Kitchen and Overwatch, and on Steam Deck I played Blake Manor, Demonschool and Balatro. Whether connected with Bluetooth, the puck or USB, the Steam Controller provided seamless play and no noticeable latency. The distance from my couch to the puck nestled behind my Steam Deck is about eight feet, and I didn’t feel a frame drop while cosplaying as a Steam Machine owner. I also never ran into battery issues, but that’s not shocking considering Valve’s claim that the gamepad has more than 35 hours on a single charge. In my testing, the battery barely registered a drop after multiple hours of playtime, and I was happy to snap on the charging puck whenever I wanted to set the controller down.

Valve notes the battery life may be lower if playing with the Steam Frame. The Steam Controller has infrared LEDs for tracking, which will obviously drain the battery a little faster. Some VR games may have you waving your controller, as there are gyroscopic sensors in there as well. As the Steam Frame isn’t out, I wasn’t able to test some of the controller’s more interesting features.

Even against players using a keyboard and mouse in competitive Overwatch matches, I won games and earned awards, passing my personal ultimate test of a controller’s capabilities. When it comes to Overwatch, I’m mostly comparing the Steam Controller to Sony’s DualSense, and it feels surprisingly similar. I enjoy the Steam Controller’s smooth slide between the bumpers and triggers, though its haptic feedback is more subtle than the DualSense’s, lacking in the analog sticks particularly. Much like with the Steam Deck, I haven’t found a consistent use case for the trackpads on the Steam Controller, but I appreciate their inclusion, the accessibility factor, and the fact that they aren’t otherwise intrusive. Now, just add a Playdate crank and I’m really sold.

The Steam Controller is a clear and unmistakable signal that Valve is joining the console wars, and perhaps by patient and diligent design, it’s appearing at a vulnerable time. Xbox is fumbling the current generation and attempting to redefine its place in the console market amid a significant leadership shakeup, while Sony and Nintendo are carrying on with standard hardware upgrade cycles in a landscape that’s based less on platform exclusivity every day. Right now there’s room for a robust PC-based storefront to stake its claim on couch gaming, and voila, here’s Valve with the Steam Machine and Steam Controller.

Similarly to the way Valve used Half-Life 2 to get people to download Steam in 2004, the Steam Controller pushes players to fully consolidate their PC libraries in its own ecosystem. You’ll have to add games with their own launchers like Overwatch, Valorant, Minecraft and Fortnite to your Steam library before you can play them using Valve’s controller. This is a small inconvenience, since it takes just a few clicks to add a non-Steam game to your profile.

(Welcome to later). However, I don’t enjoy doing it. As I was browsing through files to add Overwatch to my Steam library, I couldn’t help thinking that it would have been pretty easy for Valve to add a switch that would let the Steam Controller communicate with any PC game. Maybe it's a touch of oppositional defiant disorder, but I despise being coerced into behaviors that are designed to serve a corporation’s market control over my own workflow, especially in my personal spaces.

Now more than ever, I value my ability to choose — which businesses I work with, where I store my software, how I play — and the Steam launcher requirement is another small expansion of Valve’s incredible power in the PC games industry. It’s too easy to say, most of my games are already on Steam, no big deal, and use the Controller as an excuse to consolidate them all on Valve’s launcher. Suddenly, Steam is where you begin and end every gaming session, rather than just most. Obviously and especially with the coming rollout of the Steam Machine, this is the reality that Valve wants: a rich industry utterly reliant on its platform of DRM, shitty revenue splits and random opaque censorship. It’s the situation that Microsoft, Apple or Epic also want for themselves, but the main difference is that this future is actually in reach for Valve, and the Steam Controller is a tiny part of the plan. If willing and unforced support of a monopoly makes you bristle as well, feel free to stick with 8BitDo.

Truly though, I get it. The Steam Controller doesn’t come with a PC switch because it’s not a PC controller. It’s for controlling Steam, a service that’s become synonymous with PC and handheld gaming, and is now creeping onto the living-room scene. The Steam Controller is designed to follow you everywhere Steam is, for all your gaming needs across every screen forever and always — and there is something soothing about that idea in a Brave New World Soma kind of way. A PC controller? That’s far too limited, from Valve’s perspective.

Encroaching corporate dystopia aside, the Steam Controller is a sturdy and sleek gamepad that stands up to the competition. It’s for Valve diehards, trackpad fanatics and anyone whose main gaming hub is Steam. Which, to be clear, is a massive market that’s only poised to grow.

Valve's Steam Controller costs $99 and arrives May 4

Valve's Steam Controller will hit the market on Monday, May 4, for a going price of $99 in the United States. The Steam Controller does precisely what it says: It communicates with anything running Steam or the Steam Link app, so this includes PCs, Macs, mobile devices and the Steam Deck.

Eventually, the Steam Controller will connect to the new Steam Machine console and Steam Frame VR headset, but neither of these products have solid release dates just yet. They were originally slated to come out in early 2026 alongside the Steam Controller, but we're nearly five months into the year and only a third of that promise is poised to be fulfilled. Valve in March said it hopes to ship in 2026, dropping the "early" bit.

As noted in our review, the Steam Controller is a solid gamepad, especially for the price. It feels and looks a lot like a Steam Deck, complete with two trackpads beneath a pair of TMR thumbsticks and a standard face array. It's reactive, ergonomic, and comes with a cute little charging and connection puck that snaps onto the bottom of the gamepad. Just note that the Steam Controller is not a PC controller: It works with Steam, and only Steam. You'll have to add games with their own launchers like Overwatch, Valorant, Minecraft or Fortnite to your Steam library before playing them with Valve's proprietary controller. How convenient — for Valve, at least.

Epic is reportedly building an extraction shooter for Disney

Besides a wealth of Fortnite skins based on Disney IP, it hasn't really been clear what the entertainment company has gotten in return for its $1.5 billion investment in Epic from 2024. That could change this November, Bloomberg reports, when Epic releases a Disney-themed extraction shooter. The game is one of three Disney projects the publisher is currently working on, and is reportedly expected to be Epic's comeback after the company laid off 1,000 employees in March due to a "downturn in Fortnite engagement."

The game is reportedly similar to Arc Raiders, a multiplayer shooter where players fight for resources before escaping through an extraction point, but with Disney characters fighting enemies instead of post-apocalyptic survivors. Bloomberg writes that internal reviewers have worried that the game's mechanics are "not very original," but the project is the most promising of the three Epic is developing. The second title received middling internal reviews, according to Bloomberg, and Epic moved resources off the third project "after reports that Disney was disappointed by Epic’s release timeline."

While details of Epic's work for Disney are coming into focus, it's still unclear whether this new extraction shooter will be a standalone game or incorporated as a mode in Fortnite. In its efforts to sell the title as a "multiverse" and a competitor to Roblox, Epic has introduced multiple games inside Fortnite over the last few years with distinct mechanics. The developer announced that it would shut down three of those titles — Rocket Racing, Ballistic and Fortnite Festival Battle Stage — as part of its recent round of layoffs. According to current and former Epic employees Bloomberg spoke to, several affected employees were also working on these unannounced Disney games.

When it invested in Epic in 2024, Disney suggested it would build an "entertainment universe" with the developer, where players could "play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and more." Epic's current plans sound far less ambitious than that, but if they manage to increase engagement with Fortnite and Disney's brand, that might not matter.

ASUS ZenBook A16 review: A surprisingly light and powerful 16-inch ultraportable

I went into 2025 incredibly amped to review ASUS's 2.2-pound ZenBook A14, only to be disappointed by the lackluster performance of its Snapdragon X chip. I'm still a bit heartbroken, to be honest. But now ASUS is back with a revamped A14 and a larger 16-inch ZenBook A16, both of which sport new Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme chips. The A16 is slightly heavier at 2.6 pounds and 2.9 pounds, but it still competes with LG’s Gram Pro 16. And thanks to Qualcomm's new hardware, it's actually speedy enough to compete with Intel and AMD ultraportables.

Take everything I initially liked about the ZenBook A14 last year — its thin design and portability, its smooth "Ceraluminum" case and its bold OLED screen — stretch it out a bit, and you've got the ZenBook A16. There's an understated beauty to its design that's far more intriguing than ASUS's mainstream notebooks, like the ZenBook 14 OLED from a few years ago, and it's not trying as hard to impress as ASUS's typical gaming notebooks. It's similar to the company's gorgeous Zephyrus G14 and G16 machines, which feel high-end without needing too much gaming bling.

What struck me first about the A14 last year remains the most intriguing aspect of the A16: It just seems impossibly light for its size. The model I’m testing, which will also be sold at Best Buy, weighs 2.9 pounds due to its glass touchscreen cover. But you can also get a slimmer 2.6-pound version of the A16 at ASUS’s online store.

ASUS's Ceraluminum material, which feels like a blend of ceramic and metal, also exudes quality and warmth when you hold it. There's no shock of cold metal on your lap like you'll find with most premium laptops, including Apple's MacBook Pro. But it's also just as sturdy as those machines, with no discernible creaks or flex when stressed. ASUS claims its Ceraluminum cases are also scratch and fingerprint resistant, and so far that seems to be true of my review unit after a few weeks of testing.

The ZenBook A16's stunning 16-inch 3K OLED screen is its defining feature, and it delivers everything you'd expect from OLED. Colors look bold and bright, and it offers inky dark black levels. It delivers an eye-popping sense of contrast you won't find on most LCD screens (unless they have Mini LED backlights, like the MacBook Pro). Text appears crisp and sharp, and the large screen size does a great job of making video playback feel immersive (especially if you're laying in bed, trying to catch up on The Pitt).

Personally, I'd still opt for the A14 because of the weight difference, but if you prefer big screens this is certainly one of the most intriguing options around. The A16 also has a full-sized SD card reader and HDMI connection, both of which the smaller model lacks entirely. ASUS also included a healthy amount of other ports, including two USB-C 4.0 connections, one USB Type A 3.2 port and a headphone jack. From a productivity perspective, you can certainly get a lot more done with the ZenBook A16's connectivity.

The same holds true for Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X2 Elite chips in the A16. Both the X2E94100and X2E96100 are 18-core chips with a single core boost speed of 4.7GHz, which is a big leap over the 8-core X1 chip in last year's A14. The X2 Elite-equipped A16 also comes with a whopping 48GB of RAM, which feels downright luxurious given our current RAM availability crisis, as well as a new 80-TOPS NPU for AI workloads.

I immediately felt the difference in power when I booted up the ZenBook A16. The awkward sluggishness while browsing the web or perusing Evernote entries on the A14 was gone. Instead, the A16 always felt incredibly responsive and ready to work, like an eager puppy that never gets tired of playing fetch. Benchmarks also revealed the massive speed differences: The X2 Elite A16 scored 1,200 points higher in Geekbench 6's single-core CPU test, and its multi-core performance was twice as fast.

The comparison is a bit unfair, I'll admit, because the A14 I reviewed last year was stuck with the most basic X-series Snapdragon chip, whereas the A16 touts Qualcomm's latest and greatest hardware. That also makes the A16 a bit more expensive than last year's A14: Best Buy lists it at $1,600, whereas the A14 initially sold for $1,100.

But at least the ZenBook A16 delivers the performance you'd expect for its price range. In the PCMark 10 Applications benchmark, it scored 17,264 points, which is 1,000 points higher than Dell's Premium 16 (aka last year's XPS 16) with Intel's Core Ultra 7 255H chip. It's also leagues ahead of the old ZenBook A14, which scored a meager 12,127 points.

Benchmarks never tell the whole story, of course, but those huge performance gaps are the sort of thing you immediately notice in everyday performance. I was able to load up the ZenBook A16 with dozens of tabs, Evernote, 4K YouTube video streams and large Audacity jobs, and it never broke a sweat. Since it's an ARM-based Snapdragon system, though, be aware older apps may run into issues, or fail to work entirely.

That Qualcomm hardware also made gaming a major problem for the first generation of Snapdragon X Elite chips, which didn't perform well and were also incompatible with games that required kernel-level anti-cheat. Updates to the Windows on Arm platform fixed the latter issue, and Qualcomm also launched its Snapdragon Control Panel to deliver faster driver updates. Now all Snapdragon X Elite chips can play Fortnite, Roblox and Tencent titles. Qualcomm claims that 90 percent of games will run on the Snapdragon Elite X2 chips.

And that includes demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077. I was able to reach 80 fps in that game, while playing with medium settings in 1080p, along with enabling AMD's FSR frame generation. This wouldn't be my ideal way to play Cyberpunk, but it's a sign that the ZenBook A16 can at least hold its own in gaming. Unfortunately, it wouldn't load Arc Raiders, because there's still no support for its anti-cheat tech. Fortnite launched just fine, though, and for some people that'll be enough.

But really, anyone buying the ZenBook A16 isn't doing it to play shooters, you're doing it to get one of the lightest productivity machines around. ASUS's keyboard was comfortable to type on, though I would have liked to see more key depth akin to the Surface Laptop. Its trackpad is large and responsive, but it's also mechanical, which means you can only click along the lower two-thirds. In this price range, I'd expect ASUS to use a haptic trackpad with full coverage.

The ZenBook A14's battery life (18 hours and 15 minutes) was one of its truly impressive features. ASUS repeats history here with the A16 clocking in 21 hours and 35 minutes in our rundown test. That's the immediate benefit of having a chip based on mobile ARM architecture. During my testing, the A16 drained down to 80 percent after around four hours of continuous work.

Compatibility issues aside, the ZenBook A16 delivers just about everything I want in an ultraportable. It’s got a gorgeous OLED screen and all of the ports you need. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite chips also give it a much-needed power boost. And best of all, it's one of the lightest and sleekest 16-inch Windows laptops I've come across. Just be prepared to pay a bit extra over other ultraportables for its slim size.

The legal battle between Epic Games and Apple is escalating once again. For a second time, the warring factions are going straight to the top of the judicial system. Apple is asking for the Supreme Court to review when and how it can charge commissions on mobile purchases made via third-party payment systems. The business has requested a motion to stay on a lower court ruling regarding the fees Apple charges to software developers using those external financial systems rather than the App Store.

The last time Apple petitioned for an appeal at the top of the judicial branch, it was about a lower court requiring it to allow developers to use third-party payment options. The Supreme Court declined to hear that case. It's possible that the tech company will once again be denied, although this effort regards specifically limits on commission rates rather than the basic premise of allowing in-app payments to be processed outside the App Store.

Epic Games has been pushing both Apple and Google on the subject of their app store commission fees for years. Recently, the gaming company did appear to reach an accord with Google that saw the company's popular game Fortnite globally return to the Google Play Store in March. That ruling reportedly requires Epic's notoriously opinionated CEO to keep quiet on the subject of Google's app store fees until 2032. Epic Games recently made substantial job cuts, laying off more than 1,000 workers last month.

The video game industry is currently experiencing a seemingly endless bout of ruinous deja vu. Every month, another publisher posts an all too familiar statement about job losses in its development studios. There will be airy expressions of regret and platitudes praising the skill and contribution of the imminently jobless; it is all filtered through layers of corporate doublespeak intended to disguise the human cost of downsizing.

On Tuesday, it was the turn of Epic Games, creator of Fortnite, one of the most successful titles on the planet. In a note posted online, CEO Tim Sweeney announced that more than 1,000 jobs would be lost – this followed the cutting of 830 staff in September 2023.

Epic Games has announced sweeping layoffs of more than 1,000 employees. “The downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025 means we're spending significantly more than we're making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded,” CEO Tim Sweeney said in a memo to workers on Tuesday.

Sweeney wrote that, combined with “over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles,” the layoffs will give Epic more stability. He added that the layoffs are not related to AI.

Back in 2023, Epic laid off 830 employees. At the time, that was 16 percent of its workforce, suggesting around 4,000 employees remained at the company. If those numbers haven’t changed too much in the meantime, that means Epic is culling around a quarter of its headcount this week.

Along with a dip in Fortnite engagement, Sweeney pointed out that Epic isn’t immune from systemic issues the games industry is contending with, such as a slowdown in growth, reduced spending, “tougher cost economics” and a battle with other types of media for consumer’s attention.

However, Epic has some issues of its own to deal with. “Despite Fortnite remaining one of the most successful games in the world, we’ve had challenges delivering consistent Fortnite magic with every season; we're only in the early stages of returning to mobile and optimizing Fortnite for the world's billions of smartphones; and in being the industry's vanguard we have taken a lot of bullets in a battle which is only in the early days of paying off for ourselves and all developers,” Sweeney wrote. (He previously said Epic spent over $100 million in legal fees alone on its App Store battle with Apple.)

The path forward for the company, per its CEO, is to create “awesome Fortnite experiences with fresh seasonal content, gameplay, story and live events,” perhaps in an attempt to recapture some of that “magic” he’s referring to. Speeding up work on developer tools amid the transition to Unreal Engine 6 is important as well, Sweeney indicated.

He said that the workers Epic is laying off will receive at least four months of their base pay, though they’ll get more depending on the length of their tenure at the company. Epic will pay for extended healthcare coverage, including for six months for affected workers in the US. The company — which is not publicly traded — will speed up the vesting of stock options through next January and “extend equity exercise options for up to two years,” Sweeney said.

Epic announced the layoffs days after it increased the price of Fortnite’s V-bucks currency. “The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we’re raising prices to help pay the bills,” it said.

As part of the changes at the company, Epic is killing off three Fortnite modes. Rocket Racing (which was built by Rocket League developer Psyonix) will shut down in October. Fortnite Ballistic — a 5v5 tactical shooter mode — and Festival Battle Stage, which is a competitive version of the Fortnite Festival rhythm game, will vanish on April 16. “We've built a lot of Fortnite modes, and in some cases we failed to build something awesome enough to attract and retain a large player base,” Epic said on X.

The company noted in its Year in Review recap last month that although the hours that players spent in third-party titles on the Epic Games Store increased by four percent in 2025, “overall gameplay hours declined year over year,” hinting at a dip in Fortnite numbers. The company said PC players spent $1.16 billion on the store in 2025, an increase of six percent from the previous year. Of that, $400 million was spent on third-party PC games. However, Epic Games Store vice president and general manager Steve Allison told Polygon in February that, factoring in first-party revenue and the 12 percent cut the company takes from third-party games, “the store is already — even with all this stuff — marginally profitable now."

Today we’re laying off over 1000 Epic employees. I'm sorry we're here again. The downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025 means we're spending significantly more than we're making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded. This layoff, together with over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles puts us in a more stable place.
Some of the challenges we're facing are industry-wide challenges: slower growth, weaker spending, and tougher cost economics; current consoles selling less than last generation's; and games competing for time against other increasingly-engaging forms of entertainment.
And some of our challenges are unique to Epic. Despite Fortnite remaining one of the most successful games in the world, we’ve had challenges delivering consistent Fortnite magic with every season; we're only in the early stages of returning to mobile and optimizing Fortnite for the world's billions of smartphones; and in being the industry's vanguard we have taken a lot of bullets in a battle which is only in the early days of paying off for ourselves and all developers.
Since it's a thing now, I should note that the layoffs aren't related to AI. To the extent it improves productivity, we want to have as many awesome developers developing great content and tech as we can.
What we now need to do is clear: build awesome Fortnite experiences with fresh seasonal content, gameplay, story, and live events; accelerate developer tools with greater stability and capability as we evolve from Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN to Unreal Engine 6. And we'll be kicking off the next generation of Epic with huge launch plans towards the end of the year.
This isn't our first time being here. Epic survived upheavals in 1990's with the move from 2D to 3D with Unreal 1; in the 2000's building console games with Gears of War; and in 2012 moving to online gaming with Paragon and Fortnite. Each time, we rebuilt our foundations and earned a renewed leadership position.
Market conditions today are the most extreme we've seen since those early days, with massive upheaval in the industry accompanied by massive opportunity for the companies that come out as winners on the other side. That's what we're aiming to do for our players, and we aim to bring other like-minded developers in the industry along on the journey to build an increasingly open and vibrant future of entertainment together.
At Epic, we pride ourselves in only hiring the industry's best, so it is very painful to part with so many talented people. The folks impacted by the layoffs will receive a severance package that includes at least four months of base pay, with more based on tenure. We’re also extending Epic-paid healthcare coverage.
For example, in the U.S., they’ll receive paid coverage for 6 months. We’ll also accelerate their stock options vesting through January 2027 and extend equity exercise options for up to two years.
We'll have a company meeting Thursday to talk about the roadmap in more detail.

Fortnite will return to Google's Play Store globally on March 19

Now that Epic Games and Google have made up — or at least found a way to resolve their long-running disputes — everyone with a compatible Android device can get back to the business of playing Fortnite. The game will return to the Play Store globally on March 19, the same day that the next Fortnite season goes live. It previously dropped back onto the Play Store in the US in December.

Google pulled Fortnite from the Play Store back in 2020 after Epic tried to bypass the 30 percent cut of all in-app purchases that the storefront too. Apple did the same thing with the App Store version of Fortnite. Epic swiftly sued Google and Apple, kickstarting years-long legal battles with both companies.

The dispute with Apple ultimately led to the company having to open up the App Store in certain markets, including the US and EU. Fortnite returned to the App Store in the EU in 2024 and in the US last year.

Google and Epic reached a settlement in November. Earlier this month, Google announced that it was lowering the cut it takes of in-app payments from 30 percent to between 10 and 20 percent. At that time, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney (who reportedly agreed not to publicly talk smack about the Play Store until 2032 as part of the settlement) confirmed that Fortnite would return to Google's mobile storefront.

Epic recently announced a price increase for the in-game V-Bucks currency. It also confirmed that Fortnite Save the World — the game's original mode — is going free-to-play in April.

today I had it with windows. last nights update corrupted my booting options and I couldn’t get it to load windows. kept getting inacc booting device error.

so I kinda decided to move to Linux, specifically Ubuntu since it’s supposed to be user friendly and easier for newbies (not sure how true that is).

but What should I consider before switching?

i mainly play games with my wife or spent times watching stuff on discord (I’d stream or she’d do it since we are long distance)

I also use my pc for SoulSeek and studying (mainly watching my online classes) and that’s pretty much the use I give my PC.

main games we play are of course multiplayer or cooperative: the forest, valheim, grounded, Fortnite, stardew valley.

main games I play are single player: resident evil (any), rdr2, helldivers. I play some games from epic.

should I keep a partition for windows or fully move to Ubuntu?

any tips or advices are appreciated.

TLDR: should I fully switch from windows to Linux distribution for a user who games (single player and multiplayer) and streams on discord?

Anti-cheat is a gold mine of interesting, novel defenses—battle-hardened from years of attrition in a defender's worst nightmare. It's time we start digging.

This talk will present new work on video game anti-cheats; highlighting how they are among the most widely deployed and resilient software defenses in the industry. We will outline the key difficulties in analyzing anti-cheats and then dissect some key behaviors to explain how such systems protect game software in hostile environments.

We investigate past scenarios where anti-cheats have pioneered novel defense measures against cheating techniques, which later became relevant when deployed by serious threat actors. These cheating methods, used by groups such as Scattered Spider, Earth Longzhi, and Lazarus, in APT and ransomware attacks, are commonly handled by anti-cheat systems. If some victims had been playing Fortnite at the time of intrusion - it would have stopped real attacks.

We show how the strength of these defense methods can be tested, running grey box tests to 'prod the bear' and measure reactions. Using this data, we rank solutions based on technical strength.

We unveil a flourishing underground ecosystem generating millions in sales each year, where the driving factor of prices seems to be directly influenced by the strength of the anti-cheat. By scraping cheat marketplaces, we also show the real effect of strong defences on attacker downtime.

Tips for Switching + Possible Distros?

Hey guys!

I'm currently a college student that studies cs, math, and quantum computing, and I was thinking to switch to Linux now since I plan to go to grad school and possibly get a PhD. I definitely need some power for my device, so unfortunately I will be going NVIDIA, and I'll be taking a gaming laptop and putting Linux on it.

The device I plan to use is the ROG Zephyrus G16 (2026) - Core Ultra 9 386H + RTX 5080

And the devices I will be using with the laptop:

- Wacom Intuous Pro Medium (2025)
- Razer Deathadder V4 Pro (8KHz Mouse)
- GMMK 3 Pro 65% (8KHz Keyboard)
- CalDigit TS4 (With a monitor, but I don't think that's important to mention)
- Stream Deck+ (willing to discard because I hear it's not a fun experience, and it's becoming more of a convenience device)
- Podmic USB (I mean it's just a microphone, but could be important to mention)

I want to be able to use my device to run virtual environments, run machine learning tasks, game, video edit, take notes, and write music.

I typically game on Steam and Epic Games. The one game I'd like to be able to play is Fortnite, but I understand that anti-cheat causes a problem here, and still own a Switch 2 I can use instead.

What do I need to know before switching to Linux? Is it worth it for me to switch given what I plan to do? What distros would be best to use?

Epic hypocrisy -- Google gets $800 million in 'Fortnite' antitrust settlement

Forget about Epic's moral high-ground. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney and Google are looking to settle the Google Play app store antitrust lawsuit, in new partnership deal that sees the "Fortnite" maker pay Google $800 million.

Still from Epic Games's parody of Apple's "1984" ad. Epic used this as the start of its campaign against both iOS and Android, aiming to portray itself as the champion of the oppressed, until it was able to reach a beneficial deal with Google.

Right from the start of its legal battles with Apple, Epic Games has claimed to be doing it to help developers. While it mostly lost that case against Apple, it won the same one against Google and officially is still fighting for a settlement to help all developers — or claimed to be.

On Thursday, during the case, the court has revealed that Epic Games and Google have arranged a new deal between them. According to The Verge, Epic Games will pay Google for what the court described as multi-year "joint product development, joint commitment, joint partnerships."

Epic and Google Have a Secret $800 Million Unreal Engine and Services Deal

A federal judge revealed a previously undisclosed ~$800 million, six-year partnership between Epic Games and Google tied to Unreal Engine services and joint marketing. It raises questions about whether the deal influenced Epic's willingness to settle its antitrust case over Android. The Verge reports: [California District Judge James Donato] allowed Epic and Google to keep most of the details of the plan under wraps. But during the hearing, he quizzed witnesses, including Epic CEO Tim Sweeney and economics expert Doug Bernheim, on how it might impact settlement talks -- revealing some hints in the process. "You're going to be helping Google market Android, and they're going to be helping you market Fortnite; that deal doesn't exist today, right?" Donato asked Bernheim, who answered in the affirmative. He also described it as a "new business between Epic and Google." Sweeney's testimony cracked the mystery a little further. He referred to the agreement as relating to the "metaverse," a term Sweeney has used to refer to Epic's game Fortnite. "Epic's technology is used by many companies in the space Google is operating in to train their products, so the ability for Google to use the Unreal Engine more fullsome... sorry, I'm blowing this confidentiality," Sweeney said. Donato then offered a hard dollar figure on one part of the deal: "An $800 million spend over six years, that's a pretty healthy partnership," he said. We soon learned that refers to Epic spending $800 million to purchase some sort of services from Google: "Every year we've decided against Google, in this year we're deciding to use Google at market rates," he said. Sweeney did throw cold water on the idea that Epic and Google are jointly building a single new product together, though. "This is Google and Epic each separately building product lines," he clarified, when Judge Donato asked what the term sheet referred to with the line "Google and Epic will work together." Donato seemed potentially leery of the partnership, asking Bernheim whether it could constitute a "quid pro quo" that reduced Epic's incentive to push for terms that would benefit other developers. Currently, Epic is backing a settlement that would see Google reduce its standard app store fees worldwide and allow alternative app stores to register for easy installation on Android. Sweeney disputed the notion that Epic might be getting paid off to soften its terms, when it's the one paying out. "I don't see anything crooked about Epic paying Google off to encourage much more robust competition than they've allowed in the past," he said. "We view this as a significant transfer of value from Epic to Google." He also says the Epic Games Store won't get any special treatment from Android in the future under this deal. It appears that the settlement arrangement is tied to the business deal. Judge Donato suggested that Epic and Google would only make the deal if the settlement goes through. Sweeney says the specific terms of the deal have not yet been reached, but admitted that he expects them to. He told Judge Donato that yes, he considers the settlement and deal "an important part of Epic's growth plan for the future."

Four More Tech Bloggers are Switching to Linux

Is there a trend? This week four different articles appeared on various tech-news sites with an author bragging about switching to Linux. "Greetings from the year of Linux on my desktop," quipped the Verge's senior reviews editor, who finally "got fed up and said screw it, I'm installing Linux. They switched to CachyOS — just like this writer for the videogame magazine Escapist: I've had a fantastic time gaming on Linux. Valve's Windows-to-Linux translation layer, Proton, and even CachyOS' bundled fork have been working just fine. Of course, it's not perfect, and there's been a couple of instances where I've had to problem-solve something, but most of the time, any issues gaming on Linux have been fixed by swapping to another version of Proton. If you're deep in online games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Destiny 2, GTAV or Battlefield 6, it might not be the best option to switch. These games feature anti-cheats that look for versions of Windows or even the heart of the OS, the kernel, to verify the system isn't going to mess up someone's game.... CachyOS is thankfully pre-packed with Nvidia drivers, meaning I didn't have to dance around trying to find them.... Certain titles will perform worse than their counterparts, simply due to how the bods at Nvidia are handling the drivers for Linux. This said, I'm still not complaining when I'm pushing nearly 144fps or more in newer games. The performance hit is there, but it's nowhere near enough to stave off even an attempt to mess about with Linux. Do you know how bizarre it is to say it's "nice to have a taskbar again"? I use macOS daily for a lot of my work, which uses a design baked back in the 1990s through NeXT. Seeing just a normal taskbar that doesn't try to advertise to me or crash because an update killed it for some reason is fantastic. That's how bad it is out there right now for Windows. "I run Artix, by the way," joked a senior tech writer at Notebookcheck (adding "There. That's out of the way...") I dual-booted a Linux partition for a few weeks. After a Windows update (that I didn't choose to do) wiped that partition and, consequently, the Linux installation, I decided to go whole-hog: I deleted Windows 11 and used the entire drive for Linux... Artix differs from Arch in that it does not use SystemD as its init system. I won't go down the rabbit hole of init systems here, but suffice it to say that Artix boots lightning quick (less than 10 seconds from a cold power on) and is pretty light on system resources. However, it didn't come "fully assembled..." The biggest problem I ran into after installing Artix on the [MacBook] Air was the lack of wireless drivers, which meant that WiFi did not work out of the box. The resolution was simple: I needed to download the appropriate WiFi drivers (Broadcom drivers, to be exact) from Artix's main repository. This is a straightforward process handled by a single command in the Terminal, but it requires an internet connection... which my laptop did not have. Ultimately, I connected a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, plugged the laptop directly into my router, and installed the WiFi drivers that way. The whole process took about 10 minutes, but it was annoying nonetheless. For the record, my desktop (an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H-based system) worked flawlessly out-of-the-box, even with my second monitor's uncommon resolution (1680x1050, vertical orientation). I did run into issues with installing some packages on both machines. Trying to install the KDE desktop environment (essentially a different GUI for the main OS) resulted in strange artifacts that put white text on white backgrounds in the menus, and every resolution I tried failed to correct this bug. After reverting to XFCE4 (the default desktop environment for my Artix install), the WiFi signal indicator in the taskbar disappeared. This led to me having to uninstall a network manager installed by KDE and re-linking the default network manager to the runit services startup folder. If that sentence sounds confusing, the process was much more so. It has been resolved, and I have a WiFi indicator that lets me select wireless networks again, but only after about 45 minutes of reading manuals and forum posts. Other issues are inherent to Linux. Not all games on Steam that are deemed Linux compatible actually are. Civilization III Complete is a good example: launching the game results in the map turning completely black. (Running the game through an application called Lutris resolved this issue.) Not all the software I used on Windows is available in Linux, such as Greenshot for screenshots or uMark for watermarking photos in bulk. There are alternatives to these, but they don't have the same features or require me to relearn workflows... Linux is not a "one and done" silver bullet to solve all your computer issues. It is like any other operating system in that it will require users to learn its methods and quirks. Admittedly, it does require a little bit more technical knowledge to dive into the nitty-gritty of the OS and fully unlock its potential, but many distributions (such as Mint) are ready to go out of the box and may never require someone to open a command line... [T]he issues I ran into on Linux were, for the most part, my fault. On Windows or macOS, most problems I run into are caused by a restriction or bug in the OS. Linux gives me the freedom to break my machine and fix it again, teaching me along the way. With Microsoft's refusal (either from pride or ignorance) to improve (or at least not crapify) Windows 11 despite loud user outrage, switching to Linux is becoming a popular option. It's one you should consider doing, and if you've been thinking about it for any length of time, it's time to dive in. And tinkerer Kevin Wammer switched from MacOS to Linux, saying "Linux has come a long way" after more than 30 years — but "Windows still sucks..."

'2025 Was the Year of Creative Bankruptcy'

PC Gamer argues that 2025 was a year full of high-profile AI embarrassments across games and entertainment, with Disney and Lucasfilm serving as the "opening salvo." From the report: At a TED talk back in April, Lucasfilm senior vice president of creative innovation Rob Bredow presented a demonstration of what he called "a new era of technology." Across 50 years of legendary innovation in miniature design, practical effects, and computer animation, Lucasfilm and its miracle workers at Industrial Light & Magic have blazed the trail for visual effects in creative storytelling -- and now Bredow was offering a glimpse at what wonders might come next. That glimpse, created over two weeks by an ILM artist, was Star Wars: Field Guide: a two-minute fizzle reel of AI-generated blue lions, tentacled walruses, turtles with alligator heads, and zebra-stripe chimpanzees, all lazily spliced together from the shuffled bits of normal-ass animals. These "aliens" were less Star Wars than they were Barnum & Bailey. It felt like a singular embarrassment: Instead of showing its potential, generative AI just demonstrated how out of touch a major media force had become. And then it kept happening. At the time, I wondered whether evoking the legacy of Lucasfilm just to declare creative bankruptcy had provoked enough disgusted responses to convince Disney to slow its roll on AI ventures. In the months since, however, it's clear that Star Wars: Field Guide wasn't a cautionary tale. It was a mission statement. Disney is boldly, firmly placing its hand on the hot stove. Other embarrassing AI use cases include Fortnite's AI-powered Darth Vader NPC, Activision's use of AI-generated art in what was widely described as the "weakest" Call of Duty launch in years, McDonald's short-lived AI holiday ad, and Disney's $1 billion licensing deal with OpenAI.

Die Unterschiede liegen vor allem in der Art und Weise, wie die Technologien aufgebaut sind: Glasfaser überträgt Licht durch ein physisches Kabel, während 5G Funk verwendet und um den Platz in der Luft konkurrieren muss. “Ein praktischer, aber oft unterschätzter Unterschied ist, dass Glasfaser direkt ins Haus geliefert wird, während mobiles Breitband erst durch die Außenwände gelangen muss, bevor der Router überhaupt Kontakt aufnimmt”, sagt Mikael Gidlund.

Anna Brunström ergänzt, dass Glasfaserkabel in der Regel stabilere Geschwindigkeiten und eine gleichmäßigere Latenz (Verzögerung) bieten, da jeder Kunde seine eigene physische Verbindung hat. Beim mobilen Breitband teilen sich alle Nutzer die Gesamtkapazität des Mobilfunknetzes. Daher wird mobiles Breitband stärker von Standort, Zeit und Auslastung beeinflusst.

Ein weiterer Unterschied besteht darin, dass mobiles Breitband häufig das so genannte Carrier-Grade NAT verwendet, eine Funktion, die es vielen Teilnehmern ermöglicht, sich einige wenige öffentliche IPv4-Adressen zu teilen. Statt einer eindeutigen öffentlichen Adresse erhält Ihr Router oft eine private Adresse, während bei Glasfaserpaketen die öffentliche Adressierung oft direkt erfolgt. Das ist wichtig, wenn Sie z.B. zu Hause einen Server einrichten möchten. Mobiles Breitband hingegen ist flexibler und mobiler. Der Einstieg ist einfach, und Sie können das Abonnement oft an verschiedene Orte mitnehmen.

Mikael Gidlund fasst die Unterschiede zwischen festem und mobilem Breitband am Beispiel von Glasfaser wie folgt zusammen:

Könnte mobiles Breitband besser sein?

An Adressen, an denen noch kein Glasfaseranschluss vorhanden ist, kann die Einfachheit des mobilen Breitbands die technischen Vorteile eines Festnetzanschlusses übertrumpfen. Die Kosten können auch deutlich niedriger sein, wenn Sie die Kosten für das Graben und Verlegen des Glasfaserkabels zum Haus selbst tragen müssten.

Mobiles Breitband lässt sich außerdem leicht mitnehmen oder an einer neuen Adresse aktivieren. Das ist praktisch und kann kosteneffektiv sein, wenn Sie ein Abonnement an mehreren Orten nutzen möchten, z. B. zu Hause und in Ihrem Ferienhaus oder Wohnmobil. Für viele Nutzer ist mobiles Breitband völlig ausreichend, auch wenn die Geschwindigkeiten und Latenzzeiten stärker variieren können als bei Glasfaser.

“An Orten, an denen kein Glasfaseranschluss verfügbar ist, kann mobiles Breitband auch ein deutlich besseres Nutzererlebnis bieten als festes Breitband, das auf älteren Technologien wie ADSL basiert”, rät Anna Brunström.

Karlstads universitet

Mikael Gidlund weist auch auf die Flexibilität als großen Vorteil des mobilen Breitbands hin. Er sagt, dass Nutzer, die hauptsächlich herunterladen (z. B. Surfen und Streaming von Filmen), die geringere Upload-Geschwindigkeit des mobilen Netzes nicht so stark bemerken werden wie diejenigen, die z. B. Spiele spielen oder Videotelefonate führen.

Wie können Sie entscheiden, was für Ihre Situation das Richtige ist?

Bei Glasfaseranschlüssen sind eigentlich nur der Preis und der Kundenservice des Internetanbieters ausschlaggebend dafür, wie gut die Verbindung funktioniert. Wenn Sie sich für ein Abonnement entscheiden, können Sie sich im Grunde darauf verlassen, dass Sie die versprochene Geschwindigkeit erhalten, und diese wird in der Regel nicht wesentlich variieren.

Bei mobilem Breitband ist das viel schwieriger und die Situation kann sogar bei zwei Nachbarn völlig unterschiedlich sein.

Denken Sie also immer zuerst an die Bedürfnisse Ihres Haushalts. Wie abhängig sind Sie von einer stabilen Verbindung zu jeder Zeit? Welche Art von Diensten nutzen Sie und wie viele gleichzeitige Nutzer können Sie erwarten? Sind es hauptsächlich Downloads oder müssen Sie auch große Datenmengen hochladen? “Wenn Sie eine öffentliche IP-Adresse benötigen, prüfen Sie, ob es möglich ist, eine solche für das von Ihnen in Betracht gezogene Abonnement zu erhalten”, ergänzt Anna Brunström.

Mikael Gidlund meint, dass die Leistung, die Sie mit mobilem Breitband erhalten, von Faktoren wie der Umgebung, der Auslastung, dem Netz des von Ihnen gewählten Betreibers und der Bauart des Hauses abhängt. Er empfiehlt, dass jeder, der sich für mobiles Breitband entscheidet, vier Dinge beachten sollte:

1. Wie gut das Netz an Ihrem Wohnort funktioniert

Es ist selten möglich, ein Abonnement im Voraus zu testen, aber Sie können sich dennoch einen relativ zuverlässigen Eindruck davon verschaffen, wie sich die Verbindung verhalten wird. Am praktischsten ist es, wenn Sie ein Mobiltelefon desselben Betreibers verwenden, den Sie nutzen möchten, und Tests an dem Ort durchführen, an dem Sie den Router aufstellen werden. “Es ist wichtig, zu verschiedenen Tageszeiten zu messen, vor allem am Abend, wenn die Belastung normalerweise am höchsten ist”, sagt Mikael Gidlund.

Geschwindigkeitstests eignen sich gut für diesen Zweck, während Netzabdeckungskarten nur als grobe Richtlinie betrachtet werden sollten und oft zu optimistisch sind.

Tipp: Die Bundesnetzagentur hat vor Kurzem ein neues Messtool für Internetgeschwindigkeit bereitgestellt, mit dem Sie unter anderem die gesetzlich vorgeschriebenen Mindestwerte prüfen können.

2. Wie das Haus gebaut ist

Mikael Gidlund sagt, dass das Material der Außenwände einen großen Einfluss auf die Geschwindigkeit des Mobilfunknetzes im Inneren des Hauses hat. Viele neue Häuser haben Fenster mit Energieglas, das mit einer Metallfolie überzogen ist, was die Signalstärke stark abschwächt.

Dies ist ein technisches Problem, das nicht vom Betreiber abhängt, sondern von den Gesetzen der Physik: Je höher die Frequenz, desto schwieriger ist es für das Signal, Materialien zu durchdringen. Die schnellsten 5G-Netze nutzen diese höheren Frequenzen.

Eine Möglichkeit, das Hausdesign zu umgehen, ist eine Außenantenne. Diese wird nicht nur im Freien aufgestellt, wo das Signal stärker ist, sondern kann auch gerichtet sein und über Signalverstärker verfügen. In manchen Fällen kann dies die einzige Möglichkeit sein, eine zufriedenstellende, mobile Breitbandgeschwindigkeit zu erhalten.

3. Wahl des Betreibers

Die Einführung von 4G und 5G ist alles andere als gleichmäßig verteilt. Größere Städte haben oft eine gute 5G-Abdeckung, ebenso wie dort, wo sich viele Hauptverkehrsstraßen befinden. Aber in kleineren Gemeinden und dünn besiedelten Gebieten bietet 4G immer noch die praktischste Abdeckung, und 5G ist möglicherweise gar nicht verfügbar oder erreicht nur bestimmte Teile des Ortes.

Die Unterschiede zwischen den Betreibern sind beträchtlich. Es ist nicht ungewöhnlich, dass ein Betreiber an einem bestimmten Ort hervorragend abschneidet, während ein anderer trotz ähnlicher Abdeckungskarten deutlich schlechter abschneidet. Daher sollte die Wahl des Betreibers mindestens so wichtig sein wie die Wahl zwischen Glasfaser und mobilem Breitband, so Mikael Gidlund.

4. Wie viele Menschen teilen sich die Kapazität?

Alle Nutzer, die mit einer bestimmten Zelle (d.h. einem Mobilfunkmast) verbunden sind, müssen sich deren Gesamtkapazität teilen. Je mehr Nutzer und je mehr sie versuchen, zu tun, desto weniger Kapazität steht für jeden Nutzer zur Verfügung. Dies macht sich vor allem abends bemerkbar, wenn viele Menschen Filme streamen oder wenn in der Gegend eine Veranstaltung stattfindet, sodass mehr Menschen als sonst anwesend sind. Oder an Orten, an denen ungewöhnlich viele Menschen mobiles Breitband anstelle von Festnetz nutzen, und in großen Wohnblocks.

Mit anderen Worten: Wenn Sie allein in einem Landhaus wohnen, das sich zufällig in der Nähe eines Mobilfunkturms befindet, nur wenige Nachbarn haben und das Internet hauptsächlich tagsüber nutzen, werden Sie wahrscheinlich ein viel besseres Erlebnis haben, als wenn Sie hauptsächlich abends Netflix schauen wollen und in einem großen Wohnblock wohnen.

Sind “unbegrenzte” mobile Breitbandtarife wirklich unbegrenzt?

Anna Brunström sagt, dass die meisten unbegrenzten Tarife bei normaler Nutzung als unbegrenzt wahrgenommen werden. Aber es gibt Grenzen, an die Sie stoßen können. So umfasst mobiles Breitband normalerweise kein Roaming außerhalb des Landes.

Außerdem gibt es oft Klauseln im Vertrag, die eine ungewöhnliche Nutzung einschränken. Wenn Sie die Obergrenze Ihres Abonnements erreichen, erhalten Sie in der Regel eine reduzierte Geschwindigkeit, bis der Zeitraum zurückgesetzt wird oder Sie die Möglichkeit haben, Ihr Konto aufzuladen. Lesen Sie also immer das Kleingedruckte.

Mikael Gidlund ergänzt, dass die Betreiber oft Regeln für die so genannte “faire Nutzung” haben. Wer in kurzer Zeit viele Daten verbraucht, kann seine Geschwindigkeit entweder vorübergehend in Spitzenzeiten oder bis zum Ende des Zahlungszeitraums drosseln lassen.

Eine dritte Option

Anna Brunström weist darauf hin, dass Glasfaser- und Mobilfunknetze nicht die einzigen Technologien sind, die zur Verfügung stehen, um eine Internetverbindung zu erhalten. Eine weitere Option, die in den letzten Jahren praktikabel geworden ist, ist das Satelliteninternet.

Die gebräuchlichsten Lösungen für Verbraucher, wie z.B. Starlink, basieren auf Satelliten, die in einer erdnahen Umlaufbahn kreisen. Die typischen Geschwindigkeiten liegen bei 50-200 Mbit/s und die Latenzzeit bei 20-50 ms, was für Streaming, Videokonferenzen und das tägliche Surfen ausreichend ist.

Positiv ist auch, dass sich mobiles Breitband und Satellit ergänzen, denn in dicht besiedelten Gebieten, in denen normalerweise eine gute Mobilfunkabdeckung besteht, funktioniert der Satellit weniger gut. In Gebieten mit schlechterer Mobilfunkabdeckung funktioniert der Satellit oft gut.

Apple announced on December 17 that it is introducing support for third-party app stores and payment processors to Japanese iPhones. But if you thought that news would make Tim Sweeney happy, think again.

As a recap, Apple's announcement brings Japanese iPhones closer to the way iPhones function in the European Union. The rule changes mean that third-party app stores can be installed, while developers can also choose how they accept payments for apps and digital goods.

App developers escalate EU fight over Apple's App Store fees

A coalition of developers has petitioned the European Commission, saying Apple's revised App Store fees continue to disadvantage EU apps.

On Tuesday, 20 app developers and consumer groups have petitioned the European Commission in an attempt to knock down Apple's commission fees even further. They argue that the fee structure puts their apps at a disadvantage compared to their U.S. rivals.

The Coalition for Apps Fairness (CAF) is made up of companies, including Astropad, Epic Games, Masimo, Life360, Proton, Spotify, and more. Many of these companies have waged war on Apple both on and off U.S. soil.

Windows 11 on Arm + Snapdragon X: Gaming, the Final Frontier ⭐

Over 18 months ago, I walked into a meeting room in One World Trade in New York City, nervous that what I was about to see would in some way expose the inevitable lies: Windows 11 on Arm running on Qualcomm’s yet-to-be-released Snapdragon X Elite chipset was just like all the failed attempts to make sense of this platform before it.

That is not what happened. At that meeting, I got my first hands-on experience with Windows 11 on Arm on Snapdragon X Elite wasn’t just a major leap forward, it was a miracle. It wasn’t just better than expected, it was—and still is—better than the unreliable x64-based chipsets foisted on the world by Intel (especially) and Intel. Within a few months, Microsoft had launched the Copilot+ PC platform and I had gotten my first Snapdragon X Elite-based PCs, including a Surface Laptop 7 that is still one of my favorite laptops. Microsoft and Qualcomm had done the impossible. They really did it.

Snapdragon X, even the lowest-end versions, can handle any traditional Windows productivity workload with ease. But as good as this platform is, it’s not perfect. And while the change averse are always quick to jump on any problems with Snapdragon X, real or imagined, there was only one concern, which lingered and continued over the previous 18 months, that I still struggle with. The good news? It only impacts a tiny percentage of people and doesn’t compromise the experience for those who want a PC that just works.
But what about the games?
I am referring, of course, to games. Even on that first day in early 2024, during my first hands-on experience with Snapdragon X Elite, I was surprised to see that Qualcomm was pushing gaming at all, let alone so hard. Microsoft’s Prism emulator has no trouble emulating x64 code, but PC games are unique in that they’re optimized for very specific Nvidia and and Radeon dedicated graphics chipsets. Furthermore, many of the world’s most popular games, like the titles in the Call of Duty series, Fortnite, and many others, require anti-cheat software. Neither of these crucial pieces of the gaming puzzle worked with Arm, and though the processor, GPU, and NPU in Snapdragon X are all notably good, they’re not that good: Even Apple struggles to attract games on the Mac, which has a similar architecture to Snapdragon X, and it’s generations more mature.

And yet there they were, showing off several x64 games, all running in emulation on Snapdragon X Elite prototype laptops. I briefly played Baldur’s Gate, Control, and Redout that day, and each ran normally and without any glitches. This wasn’t staged, in that I and others who showed up for meetings that day were free to play these games, interact with all kinds of other software, and probe these PCs to our hearts’ content without intervention. But I had assumed that Qualcomm (and Microsoft) would focus on the fundamentals, just making Windows 11 on Arm and Snapdragon X—what we would later call Copilot+ PCs?...

A federal appeals court has reopened the door for Apple to collect commissions on outside payments again, but the company won't see any money until Epic signs off on it.

Epic Games viral '1984' ad campaign against Apple

In April, Judge Gonzalez Rogers found Apple in violation of a 2021 injunction that required the company to remove anti-steering barriers for third-party payments. As a result, the company was no longer allowed to charge any commission, not just its previous 27%.

On Thursday, a court upheld the spirit of the law, saying that Apple had, in fact, violated the anti-steering injunction with its steep commission fees. But it also partially sided with Apple, claiming that the ban on all commissions went too far.

What happened when a school in Los Angeles gave a sixth grader an iPad for use throughout the school day? "He used the iPad during school to watch YouTube and participate in Fortnite video game battles," reports NBC News. His mother has now launched a coalition of parents called Schools Beyond Screens "organizing in WhatsApp groups, petition drives and actions at school board meetings and demanding meetings with district administrators, pressuring them to pull back on the school-mandated screen time." Los Angeles Unified is the first district of its size to face an organized — and growing — campaign by parents demanding that schools pull back on mandatory screen time. The discontent in Los Angeles Unified, the second-largest school district in the country, reflects a growing unease nationally about the amount of time children spend learning through screens in classrooms. While a majority of states prohibit children from using cellphones in class, 88% of schools provide students with personal devices, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, often Chromebook laptops or iPads. The parents hope getting a district that has over 409,000 students across nearly 800 schools to change how it approaches screen time would send a signal across public school districts to pull back from a yearslong effort to digitize classrooms.... [In the Los Angeles school district] Students in grade levels as low as kindergarten are provided iPads, and some schools require them to take the tablets home. Some teachers have allowed students to opt out of the iPad-based assignments, but other parents say they've been told that they can't. Parents can also opt their children out of having access to YouTube and several other Google products... The billion-dollar 2014 initiative to give tablet computers to everyone became a scandal after the bidding process appeared to heavily favor Apple, and it faced criticism once it became clear that students could bypass security protocols and that few teachers used the tablets. Currently, the district leaves it up to individual schools to decide whether they want students to take home iPads or Chromebooks every day and how much time they spend on them in class... Around 300 parents attended listening sessions the district held last month about technology in the classroom. Nearly all who spoke criticized how much screen time schools gave their children in class, pointing to ways their behavior and grades suffered as students watched YouTube and played Minecraft... Several also asked district officials to explain why children as young as kindergartners were asked to sign a form to use devices in which they promised they would honor intellectual property law and refrain from meeting people in person whom they met online. "Is it possible for children to meet people over the internet on school-issued devices?" one father asked. The district officials declined to answer, saying it was meant to be a listening session. In 2022, Los Angeles Unified started requiring students to complete benchmark assessments on educaitonal software i-Ready, the article points out, which generates unique questions for each students. "But parents and teachers are unable to see what children are asked, in part because the company that makes the program considers them proprietary information..." One teacher says his school's administartors are requiring him to use i-Ready even though it doesn't have any material for the science class he's actually teaching. He's also noticed some students will use answers from AI chatbots, bypassing the school's monitoring software by creating alternate user profiles. But the monitoring software company suggests the school misconfigured their software's settings, adding "More commonly, when students attempt to bypass filtering or monitoring, they do so by using proxies."
