๐ Problems with thinkpad e595

Hello there,
i consider this as a Update Threat about common problems related to the thinkpad e595 running linux. This shouldn't be Distro or WM related. Anyways, i am currently on arch; kernel 5.6.3 using kde(plasma).
I configured my e595 as followed:
Ryzen7 3700u
Realtek RTL8822BE (i know you cant configure this manually, but i just read about a user that has a intel Wifi card on his e595)
custom upgraded 16GB of RAM (16GB (2x 8192MB) HyperX Impact DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM CL14-14-14 Dual Kit)
Rest is standard.
โ
My system is encrypted, i run lvm on luks, grub as a bootloader, a standard Xorg config, sddm as a greeter and the amdgpu driver.
------
#1 WiFi:
i dont experience any problems with using the WiFi controller above. status: kernel 5.6.3
โ
#2 keyboard and special keys:
I personally switched the ctrl and fn key in the uefi.
Working keys/key combinations with FN:
Mute, volume up / vol. down, toggle WiFi
โ
Non working key combinations:
brightness up/down, toggle touchpad
โ
unknown:
toggle bluetooth (i personally disabled bluetooth in the uefi, cause i dont need it.),
toggle mic (i dont get any visual feedback on this),
toggle screen (whatever this is, no visual feedback),
open settings (fn+f9, i guess this should open the default system settings on kde),
open favourites (dont know what this should open in linux)
โ
i pressed all keys, starting with F1, ending with F12 while i ran acpi_listen:
[dennis@dennisnotebook ~]$ acpi_listen
button/mute MUTE 00000080 00000000 K #fn+f1 works. mute.
button/volumedown VOLDN 00000080 00000000 K #fn+f2 works. vol down.
button/volumeup VOLUP 00000080 00000000 K #fn+f3 works. vol up.
button/f20 F20 00000080 00000000 K #fn+f4 unkown. should toggle mic.
video/brightnessdown BRTDN 00000087 00000000 #fn+f5 doenst work. bright. down.
video/brightnessup BRTUP 00000086 00000000 #fn+f6 doesnt work. bright. up.
video/switchmode VMOD 00000080 00000000 K #fn+f7 doesnt work/unknown. toggle video output/screen
button/wlan WLAN 00000080 00000000 K #fn+f8 works. toggle. wifi.
###no event for fn+f9! this may should open the settings###
ibm/hotkey LEN0268:00 00000080 00001314 #fn+f10 unknown. toggle bluetooth
ibm/hotkey LEN0268:00 00000080 00001315 #fn+f11 doesnt work. toggle touchpad
ibm/hotkey LEN0268:00 00000080 00001311 #fn+12 doesnt work. open favourites
hitting the fn+"=" key twice gives a ยด.
no events for fn+print screen
fn+backspace hibernates/deep sleep or however it is called. But, it is bugged anyways, the e595 wont wake up after however this is called. Same behaviour when pressing fn+4.

i found this: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ACPI/ThinkPad-special-buttons
but i didnt understand it. lol. But i'd like to. If anyone feels free to answer stupid questions, leave a comment ;)
Where do the numbers after the keyboard_key come from? how do they match with the numbers i receive when running acpi_listen? should they match?
when scrolling down that site you can find a tutorial how to setup the backlight (#3), didnt try that yet.
โ
#3 adjusting backlight
this is related to problem #2, you cant adjust the brightness of the screen.
i read the boot protocols and did this:
[dennis@dennisnotebook ~]$ systemctl status [systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service](mailto:systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service)
โ [systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service](mailto:systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service) - Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of backlight:acpi_video0

[dennis@dennisnotebook ~]$ sudo journalctl -b _PID=895

Apr 12 15:43:30 dennisnotebook systemd-backlight[895]: Failed to get backlight or LED device 'backlight:acpi_video0': No such device
the error message in the systemd status dont change at all when applying different acpi_backlight kernel parameters (/etc/default/grub). acpi_backlight=video/vendor/native/none it doesnt matter.
Related to #4 when running powertop -c the backlight gets somehow adjusted.
โ
#4 power saving
i installed TLP and powertop.
I ran powertop --auto-tune and powertop -c
the idle power consumption varies between 5,X/6 watts and 9 watts, highly depends on if i'm moving my mouse constantly or not.
โ
#5 touchpad
the e595 uses the SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad.
i personally disabled it when plugging in a mouse. I dont plan to use the laptop on my lap, thus i always have a mouse near me.
i disabled the red pointer device (trackball or however this is called) in the uefi.
โ
โ
Let me now if you experience any problems. I'll update this post when things change due to software updates/ i find more wiki articles and try them / you comment your experiences / i try different software.
โ
Hopefully we will all profit from this. Thank you for reading!
