COVID-19’s Impact on Tor
The Tor Project, Inc. the Nonprofit organization behind the Tor privacy browser, announced on Friday it was laying off a third of its staff due to the COVID-19’s impact on Tor.
The “Tor Project” via a blog post announced that;
We had to let go of 13 great people who helped make Tor available to millions of people around the world. We will move forward with a core team of 22 people and remain dedicated to continuing our work on the Tor Browser and the Tor software ecosystem.

Further, The organization said that it was “terribly sad” to let go of 13 employees and will now move forward with a core team of 22 people.
The Tor Project, Inc. is a "Massachusetts-based 501 research-education nonprofit organization" founded by computer scientists Roger Dingledine, Nick Mathewson and five others. The Tor Project is primarily responsible for maintaining software for the Tor anonymity network. However, The Tor Project is mainly based on donations and contributions. the coronavirus lock-down and the resulting global economic decline has taken its toll on the flow of the donations, and so Tor could no longer sustain its manpower size, The Tor Project further added that the world won’t be the same after this crisis, and the need for privacy and secure access to information will become more urgent. In these times, being online is critical and many people face ongoing obstacles to getting and sharing needed information. We are taking today’s difficult steps to ensure the Tor Project continues to exist and our technology stays available.
Despite the lay-offs, The Tor Project has re-assured users that its privacy tools will continue to be developed ensuring that those who need them can maintain their privacy and security.
