๐ If I had a computer with only a thumb drive as it's hard drive, how exactly does booting from that work?

I'm not asking so much about how to load the OS onto the drive, that I'm pretty sure I can figure out easy enough. I'm wondering though, this computer in question uses a USB network adapter, would I install the driver for that on the thumb drive and everything should work just fine with the internet thing?
I'm giving my Dad my old PC since he wants to exclusively run SETI on it, but my new computer as good as it's other specs are, doesn't have a very good hard drive, so I'm taking my old PC's drive. But I figured since he only wants it for SETI, maybe some simple setup with Linux or something is our best bet.
