๐ Backup your data!

Yesterday, I created a timeshift backup. I noticed that I was running out of disk space. I spun up ncdu
and filelight
to check what's going on. I found that /run/
is taking up 100GB! I found a folder /run/.../home
(forgot the exact path) which was taking up the space. Immediately I run rm -rf /run/.../home
. Little did I realize that I just deleted my /home
directory.
And then I did cd ~
. No such file or directory
. The only logical conclusion is that /run/.../home
was a freaking symlink to /home
. Then I created a new home mkdir /home; mkdir /home/sujay1844; chown -R sujay1844:sujay1844 /home/sujay1844
. I had all my school documents backed up in Dropbox and my config files are on Gitlab. I restored everything. Within 10 minutes, I was up and running. The only thing I lost is the ~/Downloads
. Honestly, that is acceptable. I can't imagine how much I'd have lost if I didn't backup my files.
Moral of the story: Even if you're not tinkering with your computer, KEEP BACKUPS
