What is the purpose of running Linux on your main desktop machine?

I just don't get it. I really don't. [newbie here]

I'm a 21 y.o. male. The only thing I can do with on my pc is turn it on, launch steam, launch Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and play. I heard you can get better performance on Linux, so I said to myself to the hell with it and gave it a try.

I've gone through a long process of learning a new OS coming from Windows. I've used Pop OS, which was great. I ran the csgo fps benchmark and the results were quite good +15 average FPS. And I can tell you numbers don't lie. I played few deathmatchs and I can say to you it was a lot smoother. It's hard to explain, if you haven't played it before. At this point I wasn't all that competitive and passionate about csgo, started playing some minecraft.

Then I stumbled upon Arch Linux which promised to be lightweight compared to the bloated Pop OS. I went through the pain of Arch Linux install and for some reason I just couldn't get the internet to work. The DHCP client just refused to work. After countless hours researching the web, I came up with the solution of ditching DHCP completely and just setting a static IP to my PC on my router and through nmtui.

I started using dwm and I kinda grew to like it. It was hella fast, I like the shortcuts but I was getting bored of my pc looking like old broadcast teletext anytime I launched the suckless simple terminal. The people's PCs on r/unixporn surely don't look like mine :// So I decided to grab a Manjaro iso. Idk don't ask me why.

That's when the things didn't go so well. I used two seperate drives, one for win, one for linux. For some reason the automatic Manjaro installer didn't install grub properly and I couldn't boot into it. Somehow my Windows boot manager EFI partition disappeared and I don't know what happened but it looked like it merged into my main win partition or something. That was like the end point for me. I was left extremely frustrated. It forced me into ditching Linux completely and reinstalling Win because the EFI partition got corrupted :)

So I've used Linux as my main OS for about 6 months or so. I went through the pain with DHCP, audio, not being able to use my Canon printer, disabling mouse acceleration. I don't know how to explain it, but the mouse always felt different on Linux than in Windows. Something just ain't right. I mentioned that got a 15 FPS boost in csgo but that was quickly denied with the unability to install a good anti-cheat in order to play in 3rd party online leagues. I've tried other games like Mafia: Definitive Edition which runs pretty poorly on Proton. At this point I'm really questioning myself "Why do I even use it?

I started thinking and came to the conclusion that it's not for everyday use. The hardware and software support is just bad. Can't use Photoshop or Premier. Can't use FL Studio natively. So ok, It's not for graphics, not even for professional video editing, not for music production. I used GIMP once to falsify a COVID test (I haven't left my house since October last year there was no way I was infected :)). It worked pretty well. I'm no expert but even I can see it lacks some features. What is it good for then? Sure, I can browse the web on it, just like anywhere else but why the hell does my monitor switch off when I'm watching a twitch stream in my bed? Can you use it for development? Sure thing, but I guess only if you want to develop apps for Linux right? I know the entire web is built upon Linux servers, but other than that. Supercomputers maybe?? idk

I happen to own a Microsoft Surface Book 2 15 inch. When I used to go to class in my uni, my math teacher always used Linux on his laptop and even tried to persuade me to install Linux on my Surface Book. He used to talk trash about Microsoft every time he saw that laptop. Believe me even I hate Microsoft. I bought a product that is supposed to work out of the box.

I can't even imagine the pain of setting up hybrid GPUs. I can't imagine using the stylus on Linux, I'm just scared to even think of what needs to be done. I'm not talking about the disconnecting the screen from the keyboard base thingy. That couldn't ever work, could it?

Ye so, I liked Pop OS and Arch. Anytime I hear Manjaro, Vietnam-like flashbacks struck me *Fortunate son starts playing*

What does Linux do better? Am I missing something? Do you see any reason for me to get back into it?

I'm sorry that this is a very inconherent text but I'm just exhausted. I'm asking why do you use Linux? What Linux distribution are you using? What are you using your computer for? What software are you using? How long have you been using Linux?

What needs to happen to Linux in order to get adopted on the desktop? Why do you like Linux?
