[Sorry for a long post]
The last time I posted here I was generally confused and just wanted to ask people what they use Linux for, how they used it, what advantages it brings to them and so on. I felt like I was being misunderstood and eventually getting cancelled. The only thing I said was Linux makes my life harder and I struggle to find it useful. When it is useful it's just harder.
People thought I was trying to be a some sort of a Microsoft ambassador in the Linux community or something idk. Look, I know Windows is trash. I have a Microsoft Surface Book 2. Few days ago, I saw a "System telemetry service" in the Task Manager and it was using 70% of CPU resources while running in the background. Look Microsoft, YOUR UNDERPOWERED, SLOW, BLOATED, SPYING PIECE OF A LAPTOP CAN GO TO HELL!!! xD
I found Linux hard to learn or hard to use something like that. I also mentioned the first thing I tried out was Pop OS and said I quite liked it. Then I said I switched to Arch Linux and started using dwm. People didn't really seem to understand that. I was thinking a lot, trying to remember why I switched to Arch Linux. And now I remember. I didn't like the GNOME desktop. I found it quite bloated and ugly and it was giving off too much weird android-tabletty feels to me. Not only that, one day I turned on my PC and suddenly I was having problems with my internet. It suddenly stopped working one day on Pop OS. At that time I was using Linux only for few days and had no idea what went wrong or how to fix it.
I was pointing out Linux just isn't user-friendly. People started criticizing me for switching from my "user-friendly out-of-the-box working Pop OS distro" that I initially liked and that I chose a hard to install hard to maintain Arch Linux. Don't worry I'm not hating on Pop OS. I also mentioned I can't do shit on my PC other than browsing the web or playing games.
I really don't recommend these "user-friendly" distros to newbies. They are very easy to install and you can run through the installation process in a matter of tenths of minutes. You just click next next next few times then reboot DONE!. You don't learn anything in this process and you'll end up with a working pre-configured system and you have no idea what just happened and what you should or shouldn't do.
I would argue Arch Linux is the easiest distro for beginners. It basically got me spoiled with its wiki and software availability.
Sure thing, the first time I booted its iso live environment I was frightened by the black screen look of the command line with the blinking cursor. But you'll at least get to know the system a little bit. At least you'll learn how to create the partitions and format the drive and stuff like that. Yeah you could argue I didn't learn much this way because I just followed what DistroTube did in his installation tutorial, but still a lot more than with Pop OS. Next things are the AUR and Arch Wiki. I even tried to get into things like pure Debian or Antix or whatever. I thought other distros would have a similar Wiki as well. That didn't turn out to be the case. Guys come on everybody should read the Arch Wiki, it's so well written and you are hating on me for using Arch?? :D
After my first initial install of Arch Linux I encountered the same problem I did on Pop OS. Internet wasn't working out of the box. Seriously? What the hell? I tried to "troubleshoot". At least I knew the problem was with the DHCP client in NetworkManager. It's kinda weird both of these problems emerged on two different distros for no apparent reason. Now these problems seem to have disappeared and the internet works out of the box even on a fresh install. Works by magic I guess idk not very important.
"They're using their operating system as a bootloader for google chrome", - Luke Smith. That pretty much sums up how I'm using my PC.
I only use it because I find it cool. Yeah doing it for the meme. I like the ability to customize everything. I learned some bash scripting (ahgheem copy pasted most of the commands for my fucking shitty scripts from random posts on StackOverflow). I recently found out Linux makes development very easy. I found it extremely frustrating having to download MS Visual Studio 8GB of data or sth like that and then I could run few lines of my bad written C code. Here I can just run the make command and launch it inside the terminal WOW. I also tried modifying some open source software written in python myself. I failed miserably but asked a friend, a CS student, who did it for me in a matter of seconds. It was just a small tweak though. He sent me the work done on messenger so I tried to run the scripts myself and my PC freezed because he uses Windows and I forgot to add #!/bin/python at the top.
One thing I managed to set up was a Samba server which a was huge pain in the ass but it kinda works. It still needs some work because I chmoded all the share files to 777 and I couldn't log into it from a very ancient device of mine. I know not ideal gotta work on that
I don't know. Who would you consider customizing your OS being a hobby? (cringey af ikr)
Linux makes me wanna hate GUI and like the command line. Not only applications everything in general. I am dualbooting with Windows off another drive and the Manjaro graphical installer wiped out all my EFI partitions on all drives. I couldn't boot into Windows nor Manjaro :)
These GUI applications tend to break sometimes and when they do you basically have no idea what went wrong. I just like having some terminal log output in case something goes wrong. I know I forget the commands and the flags so I have to google too much stuff.
What the future holds: Fixing my Samba server. I'll try to improve upon my system and customize it for my needs and getting the most out of it. I'll maybe look into building a Minecraft server or a small project with a Raspberry Pi. I also want to learn how to install software manually from source because like I said Arch Linux got me spoiled. I'm also looking for a solution where I'll be able to have a computer set up off a USB drive in a couple of minutes.
What are you thoughts on this? Do you have any tips and tricks for me? Do you agree with what I said?
