๐ Is it realistic to run Linux on a USB 3.0 flash drive, for simple tasksโwithout issues?

I want to set up Linux (probably Ubuntu) on a USB 3.0 flash driveโto manage ebooks and my music. I will only be using one piece of software and a browser at the same a time (and also connecting my iPod / new music device when I buy it). I will only be using around 100GB on the drive.
I know it's doable, but I don't want to have the USB drive heat up, get damaged, and then lose my music and ebooks (they would still be on the devices, but still). I've also considered a portable HDD, but would need to buy a new one, it's bigger, I only need 100GB, I want the drive to only be for one purpose, etc.
Would it be possible/realistic to manage my ebooks and music on Linux, installed on a USB 3.0 flash driveโ without the drive heating up or having major issues?
