๐ Setting default application

Hi,
Sort of an unusual question I guess.
I am running a Qt-based modular custom built desktop environment. Among the modules is an integrated media player.
So what I want to do is to register this media player as the default to play music and videos, for example, by double clicking the file in any file manager.
I kind of know how registering default applications work, but my case is special in the sense that the application isn't standalone, and as such I need a different approach.
I guess I could develop a little program that always runs in the background that serves as the 'default application', and sends any file URLs it receives to the media player using DBus. Or perhaps set the desktop environment as the default and do it from there.
What would you recommend?
