๐Ÿ“š My experience with Linux, what i liked and disliked, and why i went back to Windows (From a "Normie"'s perspective)

Hey everyone, i wanted to preface this post by saying that i'm not making this post to hate on Linux, i loved the OS, i was actually quite disappointed that i had to switch back to Windows, i just wanted to share my experience, and i'm waiting eagerly for the day when i'll be able to switch to Linux as my main OS.

Context :

I switched to Linux in February of this year after my Windows PC got infected by some ransomware and ultimately started getting fed-up for the lack of privacy and care microsoft has for you in Win10

I mostly used Pop!_Os and used Manjaro for a week or so.

Yesterday i decided to switch back to Windows

What i liked about Linux :

Amazing installers : For both of the Distros i installed, the Installers were amazing, all of them give you so much control and make it so easy to understand what is going on, partitioning the disks yourself, no forcing you to sign up for some horrible "Online Account" spyware garbage, it's just phenomenal, I've seen people install Arch and i love the absolute freedom it gives you.

โ€‹

No bloatware : Both of the distros i installed had no "Weather", "Feedback Hub" "Microsoft Recommended Browser" trash, it helps me be sure of what software i have running on my system and not worrying about wasting performance.

โ€‹

Package Managers : Linux was the first time i had been introduced to package managers and i loved them, no needing to open websites and choose which OS you have and all that, just enter a terminal command or open the package manager GUI , hit install and done!

โ€‹

My RAM isn't being devoured : On Windows, while i'd be doing nothing, atleast 25-40% of my 16GB DDR4 ram would be being consumed, it becomes infurating after a while.

โ€‹

(Almost)No malware : Need i say more?

Privacy : It gives me ease of mind to know that my information isn't being keylogged and collected at all times.

Customization : I could make KDE look like Windows 11, or Big Sur, i could change each and everything in my desktop and gain full control over it, fascinating.

โ€‹

What i didn't like :

Issues with anticheats : The game i play the most is "VALORANT", which has a very invasive anticheat and doesn't support Linux, this annoyed me, i found out about VFIO Single-GPU passthrough from a video and researched it for a week, someone with only about 2 months of Linux experience such as me was bound to struggle with this, and i ended up breaking my Pop_OS! installation twice, i then swithced to Manjaro and tried it, and absolutely wrecked my Manjaro installation, none-theless i held on to Linux and played the games which i could through Proton.

โ€‹

The freedom can get confusing for a newcomer : I knew nothing about how much freedom i'd get when i first switched, and often-times i'd do something stupid and have no idea how it happened, i somehow managed to make 300gb of disk space disappear on Manjaro even though there were no programs and had to reinstall my OS to fix it because i had no idea what was happening.

โ€‹

Pet peeves : ASUS Armoury crate and Glorious Model O Software aren't on Linux, so i had no way to manage my RGB and pc settings, i never got around to finding a way to manage settings but i had heard about an app called OpenRGB, at first it was pretty cool, but i discovered that it'd reset the RGB changes i'd made, every time i'd reboot, which brings me to my last issue.

How difficult it can be to find (up-to date) documentation : A lot of the issues i would find would have solutions i could easily find online, but for the last 10% of issues i'd not be able to find a fix online (or at least one that was updated and still working) and just be left confused not knowing what to do.

โ€‹

In the end : I'm sad that i had to switch back to Windows 10, with all of it's flaws. I loved most of my time on Linux but the small issues and constant trouble shooting that i'd have to do because i'd dig myself into a pile of crap got annoying quite fast, i'll be excitedly monitoring Linux news and perhaps even a day will come when i'll finally be able to use this amazing OS again.
