Hey everybody, as a manuscript-author privately sharing my copyrighted material with potential smalltime publishers might have staff prone to steal ideas or unintentionally mishandle/leak computer files, I’m looking for a FOSS or other licensed desktop Linux tool for information rights management. That means dynamically watermarking documents (e.g. ideally PDFs, maybe LibreOffice,etc) with the details of the recipient you’re releasing them to), and maybe other deterrence features like: adding text-copying protections, numbering/bars, restrictions, print-controls, digital signing/stamping, confidentiality warnings, maybe open-tracking. (but not necessarily all of these).
Anyone heard of such a thing for a GNU environment , e.g. from some security solutions vendor or indie Linux dev? I found two folks (Jura, ArchTIS) who still do this today — and this kind of software was more popular in the early 2000s before AcrobatDCPro’s hated cloud-move came along. Big proprietary vendors like IBM, MS, Oracle used to sell tools like this 20 years ago but I’m not finding on their websites (i guess it proved not profitable for them). But these guys are a bit overkill for me… I’m just a guy not S.H.I.E.L.D.
Better ones would have fancy tricks like embedding a mis-coded font so if you do succeed in extracting text it’ll paste as gobbledygook, or hide image-based encryptions, tiny unreadable lines, insert notices in between every word if repasted elsewhere to make it super annoying for a plagiarist, etc.
* I KNOWWW there’s no such thing as stopping people from photographing or retyping what they see on a screen, but these things do sufficiently scare the non-techie by adding a ‘feel’ of legality & monitoring
