Alternative linux-friendly brokerage to Fidelity for swing trading, IRA, etc

Linux Tipps vom 10.01.2019 um 18:27 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

I use Fidelity but their Active Trader Pro software usually crashes inside a Windows 10 guest VM. What brokerage / desktop platforms do you active traders, swing traders use that works well under linux? It'd be better if it can easily handle money transfers, IRA, etc, with good tax record keeping, etc. What have you tried and liked or not liked? I currently use thinkorswim from TD Ameritrade, but that's only for charting. Its good for that but it seems it the watchlists have a small size.

A set of systemd-journald exploits

Linux Tipps vom 10.01.2019 um 16:42 Uhr | Quelle lwn.net
Qualys has sent out a security advisory describing three stack-overrun vulnerabilities in systemd-journald. "We developed an exploit for CVE-2018-16865 and CVE-2018-16866 that obtains a local root shell in 10 minutes on i386 and 70 minutes on amd64, on average. We will publish our exploit in the near future. To the best of our knowledge, all systemd-based Linux distributions are vulnerable, but SUSE Linux Enterprise 15, openSUSE Leap 15.0, and Fedora 28 and 29 are not exploitable because their user space is compiled with GCC's -fstack-clash-protection."

Davinci Resolve in AUR

Linux Tipps vom 10.01.2019 um 15:23 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

For the longest time I've been trying to use something other than kdenlive due to the amount of crashes it's too unstable for professional use. I heard I can get resolve so I jumped on it but the installer doesn't work for Manjaro (arch) and I need to do it from the aur, but this is outdated and doesn't work. What can I do? I'd hate to go back to a Debian/Ubuntu based system

Is the smartctl of Seagate 10TB IronWolf Pro still healthy?

I can see some errors for Raw_Read_Error_Rate, Reallocated_Sector_Ct and Seek_Error_Rate. Is this concerning or is this drive still reliable?

Best book to start with Linux drivers?

Linux Tipps vom 10.01.2019 um 11:00 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

I want to learn how to write kernel code. I've seen the "Linux Device Drivers 3rd edition" by Jonathan Corbet, Alessandro Rubini and Greg Kroah-Hartman. However, it looks pretty dated. In fact, everything I found was pretty dated.

I know some C and C++, but mostly my job is Python, so yeah... I should start from a beginner's point of view - people seem to recommend that book. And yes, I know it's for free on the web, but I want a psychical copy, PDFs just don't hold my attention. So I guess my question is: is that book good enough or is there something more recent?

Anyone here with a Linux job and a philosophy background?

Linux Tipps vom 10.01.2019 um 01:27 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Is anyone here gainfully employed in some way with Linux and have a philosophy background?

Why I ask: suffice the following. I have a philosophy background (to post-doctoral level). I am considering seeking a job in computing and, ideally, in Linux-y computing. (And there are overlaps between academic philosophy and computing.)

This post might better belong in /r/linuxQuestions or elsewhere. If so, please tell me.

First i can't install vpn because vm program isn't installed correctly and now linux won't update

Linux Tipps vom 09.01.2019 um 23:59 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com
I get error:

[email protected]:~$ sudo apt install expressvpn_1.5.1_amd64.deb

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree

Reading state information... Done

E: The package virtualbox-6.0 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it."

And it doesn't make any sense and i can̈́t see logic here. After i restarted my Linux Mint suddenly i can't update because it says that this virtualbox package need to be reinstalled but it can't find it archive.

Any logical reason why it happens and how to fix it?

[$] What should be in the Python standard library?

Linux Tipps vom 09.01.2019 um 22:15 Uhr | Quelle lwn.net
<p> Python has always touted itself as a "batteries included" language; its standard library contains lots of useful modules, often more than enough to solve many types of problems quickly. From time to time, though, some have started to rethink that philosophy, to reduce or restructure the standard library, for a variety of reasons. A discussion at the end of November on the python-dev mailing list revived that debate to some extent.
