What makes one DE feel amazing in one distro and annoying in another?

Linux Tipps vom 15.01.2019 um 08:40 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Anyone but me realizing that the same DE can feel completely different despite identical settings on different distros? Right now I'm running Plasma on three distros: Suse Tumbleweed where it feels amazing, Fedora where it just manages to annoy me somehow and Manjaro where it works fine.

Appreciation Post - Revived Old Box

Linux Tipps vom 15.01.2019 um 06:18 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

I'm amazed at how Linux manages the driver side of things.

Just recently I had to fix a PC which refused to boot, had Windows 7 installed, and is a very old box(LGA 775). I reinstalled Windows 7 only to find that some of the drivers were not being detected. The motherboard on this PC is a weird Chinese OEM named GigaTech. The ethernet drivers weren't working, so had no chance of searching for proper driver, and Windows didn't know what the name of the chip was any better.

Luckily I had Mint flashed to a USB stick, and it booted right up without any complaints for drivers whatsoever.

This is amazing, I just can't wrap my head around the fact that the kernel (assuming Linux Mint) does not do things differently, has such a wide array of support even for such ancient equipment.

As a Linux Sysadmin, I feel like knowing more about how the kernel works would make me more effective at my job. Can anyone recommend a book or other resources I can use to achieve this? Hopefully, something fairly recent as I know this is a field that changes quite frequently.

Stream audio from Windows to Linux?

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 23:46 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Are there any ways to stream audio from Windows to Linux with low latency?

I found some old tutorials using JACK2 but I can't get them to work.

What worked wonderfully was sending Linux audio to Windows with pulseaudio

Surely there must be a way to do it in reverse

So I'm part of a Linux facebook page and seen a few people handing this site out to users asking where to start with Linux, is there any other all in one site like this? If not I reckon it would be pretty neat to have a site where new users can come and learn everything they need to get started.

Your thoughts? <3

Leaving That Apple Ecosystem

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 22:59 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

I’ve been using MacOS for a decade now. I use a lot of productivity software (Alfred, Text Expander, Chunkwm, SpaceLaunch, etc...) and beautiful software (Fantasitcal, Things). I also am deep in the Apple ecosystem (calendar, tasks, messages, etc...).

I’m a computer programmer so I’m interested in the customization and configuration Linux offers but I’m not sure if I’m ready to leave some of the conveniences of MacOS.

Question: are any of you previous “Mac power users” that are now using Linux full-time? Are there any big pieces of advice or gotchas that you can tell someone before they make the switch? Was it worth it for you?

Just looking to hear some people’s experiences making this kind of switch, thanks!

Binding to two ports on the same machine/network

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 18:03 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

I'm hosting a little server at home for me and a few others to use as a development box. I have it set up so that each developer has their own user account. In the scenario where there are 2 developers currently using the box and both want to run an application that binds to port 5000, I was wondering if there was some sort of proxy available that hooks into port allocations and reassigns them so that multiple services can be hosted on a single port.

Below is a diagram of the sort of functionality I'm looking for (apologies if it goes against convention, I just tried to represent it in the simplest way). In the example we assume we have 2 users, John and Bob. Both of which want to be able to expose their TCP application on port 5000.

Diagram

Now I should be able to access the service that John is hosting on port 5001 and the service that Bob is hosting on 5002.

I know how I'd do this manually (at least google knows for me anyway), but I was wondering if there was a tool available to do all this automatically?

Thanks.

Xubuntu - CPU freq too high / Powersave mod

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 16:15 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Hello guys !
I noticed my CPU rate is too high, I spend few hours, learned about governors and the differents mods like performance, ondemand ect...
My Asus-x550c's cpu can be at 800Mhz and reach to 1,8Ghz; it running in powersave mode, but, this governor mod isn't scaling correctly. My Min freq = Max freq scaling watch here

> cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor

powersave

powersave

powersave

powersave

> cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq

1800000

1800000

1800000

1800000

> cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq

1800000

1800000

1800000

1800000

but i can't change it manually :

> sudo su

> echo 800000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/cpuinfo_min_freq

zsh: permission non accordée: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_min_freq

(permission not allowed)

> ls -la | grep scaling_min_freq

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 janv. 14 15:32 scaling_min_freq

but I'm root, why can't I change it ?

Xubuntu - 4.15.0-39-generic

Many thanks for your help, ask me more details if you want :)
