Can someone explain to me fwupd?

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 14:34 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Why is it a daemon?

What part of the firmware update task requires starting at boot?

What part of the firmware update task requires a d-bus interface?

What part of the firmware update task requires being resident in memory all the time, taking up 8.5 MB?

Why not just have a cron job that checks for firmware updates, and sets a persistent notification if there are any?

Which full text search tool?

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 14:12 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

I still have a Windows machine running a copy of X1 search, a very good full text indexing tool that has saved me a lot of time for many years. It's been one of the things I missed on Linux which I didn't get around to replacing until recently when I installed recoll and as many plugins as I could find. I opted for it rather than the apparently higher rated (on AlternativeTo) Doc Fetcher as it was in the Mint repo. It's been a bit disappointing, particularly in the UI dept. I can live with it for now but I'm wondering what others think: is Doc Fetcher worth switching to or installing as well? I need full text search of emails, archive files etc. not just documents. Is there anything else? I haven't considered running X1 under WINE but would prefer to avoid this if possible (am down to one app running under WINE).

Even with WaylandEnable=false gdm3 and lightdm only load sometimes

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 14:03 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

I am happy to use either gdm3 or lightdm, but neither are stable on my Ubuntu 18.04 system, they will work for either one or several boots after I take corrective action, but inevitably this results in the greeter not loading - the last few times (at least) I noticed this was immediately after I did a sudo apt update. The graphics card on my Intel Core i5 system is an Nvidia GTX 970, and I manually installed nvidia-driver-415 when I could not load a greeter as soon as I had installed.

Searching here and elsewhere, I have tried many things to resolve this, which I will outline below. If you know something else I can try - to get either greeter stable - please let me know.

gdm3

gdm3: Installed: 3.28.3-0ubuntu18.04.3

Even with WaylandEnable=false uncommented in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, I could never login, instead of the greeter I would see either a black screen or graphic distortion like a black screen with some pink lines across the top, and I am only able to login setting nomodeset.

https://i.redd.it/bx9febk5zda21.jpg

With gd3 not working, I tried lightdm, and on encountering similar issues switched back to gdm3 again:

sudo apt-get install gdm3 sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3

This seemed to work - kind of, for the first few days I could boot most of the time. I have quiet splash permanently removed from my boot options, and boot was sometimes hanging on Started NVIDIA Persistence Daemon as below:

https://i.redd.it/oprgqtedzda21.jpg

Another time with gdm3 I saw the following output instead of the greeter:

https://i.redd.it/7xy3wemfzda21.jpg

https://i.redd.it/bbiofenfzda21.jpg

lightdm

lightdm: Installed: 1.26.0-0ubuntu1

When I use lightdm instead, and the greeter does not load, I see a flashing black screen with a single white underscore top left. I can never get to a TTY using ctrl + alt + f3/f4/f5, REISUB does not work, so I hard rebooted, the greeter loads with nomodeset, and from there without logging in I switch to a TTY and I have tried what I outline below. Sometimes if I just reboot again without nomodeset the greeter will just load properly, without my changing anything.

https://i.redd.it/v8cocnfmzda21.jpg

Observing these permissions:

-rw------- 1 dusf dusf 56 Jan 7 17:38 .Xauthority -rw------- 1 dusf dusf 15886 Jan 7 17:38 .ICEauthority drwxrwxrwt 16 root root 4096 Jan 7 17:45 /tmp

I input the following, and could login normally next reboot:

sudo chown dusf:dusf .Xauthority sudo chown dusf:dusf .ICEauthority sudo chmod a+wt /tmp

The next time the issue occurred I input the following, and could login next reboot:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

In .xsession-errors, I noticed the following line, which I thought could be relevant considering I see an underscore instead of a greeter?

_=/usr/bin/dbus-update-activation-environment

Next temporary fix:

sudo mv .Xauthority .Xauthority.bak

Again:

sudo apt-get purge lightdmsudo apt-get install --reinstall lightdm sudo apt-get install gnome

After a sudo apt upgrade a few days ago with the same issue recurring I input all of the following and everything seemed fine for a few days:

sudo apt upgradesudo apt purge lightdm sudo apt purge gnome sudo apt purge nvidia* sudo apt remove nvidia-driver-415 reboot sudo apt purge nvidia-* sudo apt install nvidia-415 sudo apt install nvidia-driver-415 reboot sudo apt purge xorg-* xserver-xorg sudo apt install xorg xserver-xorg sudo dpkg-reconfigure xorg sudo apt purge ubuntu-gnome-desktop sudo apt purge gnome-desktop-environment apt install ubuntu-gnome-desktop sudo apt install ubuntu-gnome-desktop sudo apt purge lightdm sudo apt install --reinstall lightdm

The next time the issue occurred I noticed in my .bash_history the last commands I input were:

sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade

and I uploaded the following logs:

/var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/wkfmNrrctG/

/var/log/kern.log

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/g9bRKpMnxW/

.xsession-errors

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/KhjrKYwmdj/

I read adding an xrandr line to some files may be the next step, but the actual lines seem to be system specific, and their are recommendations on adding them to different files.

How can I begin to resolve the issue, either with gdm3 or lightdm please?

Adventures in Linux #1 (Ubuntu): I like this system!

Linux Tipps vom 14.01.2019 um 01:46 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

This is a noob’s progression in Linux. I will try out different distros soon.

After I first booted up, I said “Let’s install stuff.” I went into the Software Center and it was slow, but I managed to get PowerShell (I like to use cmdlets). I then got bored and left it alone for a while, then went back. I click Ctrl+Alt+F1, then for some reason I had to log back on and my resolution was reset. I decide to go to TTY3 if I can’t get into TTY1. It has all the functions of the terminal, but it’s a real terminal with no GUI. I then proceed to exit by typing “exit” into the terminal. I go and get the other software I wanted (Synaptic and Chromium). Slow again. (I don’t know why it’s so slow, I will try Mint in one of the next parts) I decide to use apt-get to get those programs. Instead of installing Chromium from Software Center, I install Chrome from the website. Slow but not unbearable. It was refusing to go on the download page without Firefox glitching, so I took the final choice. The terminal. “You can never avoid the terminal in Linux” is true. I also proceed to install Synaptic, a software center that I’ve heard is quite useful sometimes. Now that I have bearable alternatives to Ubuntu Software Center and Firefox (which is strange, it’s good on my other computer). Next, I proceed to spend some time playing the games. What can I play? Mahjong, Solitaire, Minesweeper... I just decide to play Minesweeper. Obviously, that’s nearly impossible so I quit. I then decide to explore the file system. Boring, and I don’t need to make any changes. So I quit the file explorer and do some random stuff. There’s a calculator, why not try it out? Finally, I decide to look at LibreOffice Writer. I don’t do much in it. Then, I go and find the power off button and use that to turn it off. This is it for today’s part. The next part will come tomorrow (if I can). Bye, and sorry for the small amount of text. I’ll make bigger parts eventually.

Decentralized, distributed server protocol?

Linux Tipps vom 13.01.2019 um 23:35 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Maybe a dumb question, since it looks like the answer is no, but is there a way to federate NAS drives such that you can “donate” your extra storage to the community?

I’m looking at self-hosting soon, but I know that’s really not an option for everyone and I’d like to help change that. So many of us have so much storage—it seems like it has to be possible to distribute it somehow. Obviously stuff would have to be encrypted between nodes, but with PGP getting (at least a bit) more commonplace, there’s gotta be some solution, right?

Fortran debugging for Linux

Linux Tipps vom 13.01.2019 um 21:08 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Hello, as the title suggests, I'm looking for an IDE/editor that supports some sort of debugging for Fortran code that's available on Linux. I currently have Sublime with Fortran syntax enabled, I've also previously installed Xdebug for PHP - though I don't know if that has any relevance, but it gives you an idea of the sort of thing I'm after.

On a side note, one for Python would also be useful, so if there's something that can do both then that would be perfect.

Cheers in advance!

Installing GRUB to a USB to boot into a hidden OS.

Linux Tipps vom 13.01.2019 um 18:19 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Hi /r/linux,

I recently started using the Android_x86 and boot it directly from a USB. It contains some '.img' files like system.img, data.img and also a kernel file. (sorry for my language, I'm a complete noob).

If you have figured out till now, I'm actually using Phoenix OS (based on Android_x86 Project) here. Since my USB is a 2.0 USB and I'm using a SSD as my main storage device, I was wondering if I can place all the Phoenix OS files inside a folder and configure the USB to have a GRUB menu which boots into the Phoenix OS from the folder/files present on my SSD so that I can achieve the speeds of a SSD and can also remove USB once I'm booted.

The / of USB looks like

- efi

- boot

+ bootia32.efi

+ bootx64.efi

+ efi.img

+ grub.cfg

+ grubx64.efi

- isolinux

+ ldlinux32.c32

+ ldlinux.sys

+ libcom32.c32

+ libutil.c32

+ syslinux.cfg

+ vesamenu.c32

- Phoenix

+ data.img

+ initrd.img

+ install.img

+ kernel

+ ramdisk.img

+ system.img

Here what I want is to change the location of Phoenix folder from USB to somewhere in the SSD.

and change the grub.cfg to point it to the location of Phoenix folder on SSD. I am not actually sure if this can be achieved or not.

Anyhow, the grub.cfg looks like,

set timeout=5 set gfxmode=1024x768 terminal_output gfxterm menuentry 'Phoenix OS' --class phoenix { search --file --no-floppy --set=root /Phoenix/kernel linux /Phoenix/kernel root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=android_x86 quiet DATA= vga=788 initrd /Phoenix/initrd.img }

I'm noob at grub configuration so please guide me

Which backup software do you recommend me? In the past I used rsync to make backups of my server to a local hdd and I also tried duplicity. There are other options like restic, bzorg... but I have not tested them.

Veteran network engineer seeking help with moving to Linux.

Linux Tipps vom 13.01.2019 um 16:59 Uhr | Quelle reddit.com

Apologies in advance that a lot of this will be very random. Hey look! A squirrel!...

Problem here, is that I know next to nothing about Linux. I've held on to Windows 7 for a long time since nothing else would work well with many of my applications at work (proprietary softphone and WebEx. I can't see myself migrating to Windows 10, since it's basically just a spy machine. The other thing that "really" want to avoid is the whole "Fisher Price" UI that's been a thing lately. I hate how companies are designing their products to work with a tablet with bug huge icons. I like living in a terminal with 8 or 10pt fonts, narrow/trim interfaces, with lots of options, etc. Everything now is just.... HUGE..

Anyway... on to the point. I've been avoiding moving to Linux, partly due to my networking studies getting in the way, and partly due to it not natively supporting more than one monitor on a dockable laptop (thinkpad). Or so I thought... Up until this point, I thought that I would have to start messing with Bumblebee, etc. However, last night I tried installing Ubuntu on my T420, and 3 monitors work out of the box with no tweaking. This changes the game, and makes me want to use this as my primary OS. After fiddling with Ubuntu for a while after. I have several questions:

Everything seems huge there too... any way to tone it down? Slimmer titlebars? Smaller fonts/icons? Also, the GUI doesn't seem to have too many options. Should I be looking at a different distro? If so, I really want it to have multimonitor support for Optimus laptops. Maybe certain utilities I can use to tweak things?

Thanks for the help in advance, in these uncharted waters...
