๐ Good tablets to turn into a Linux drawing tablet?

So an effort I've been making since a year or ago or so was to move to using more and more free software, this started with video and audio editing, photo and drawing software, OS now, and in general. grant it I'm not a diehard FOSS guy, I just like to generally know the shit I'm running under the hood doesn't glow and can be changed or altered if the need arises.
So backstory aside, I want a tablet for a few reasons, mainly to draw, I already own one but frankly I'd prefer something more portable at this point as the one I have is a big clunky screen tablet that needs plugged in with like 3 different cords and is annoying.
From some research I've conducted it seems to me most of what makes a drawing tablet "good" is how responsive it is, which is typically an issue of the OS, hardware and memory/storage.
and the stylus relating to the tablet.
This sort of pinged an idea in my head, could I buy a decent but older model tablet? boot Linux or some more free software version of android to it? get some custom drivers for a quality Stylus, and get near the same quality of a drawing tablet for nowhere near the same money spent?
Is this a stupid idea or am I asking to get into the weeds with headache and poor results?
