grep like search with preprocessing

Hi,

I am looking for a grep like program that supports preprocessing of any form (e.g. indexing, ...).

I'd like to - preprocess a static file - search for a pattern - get all line indices of lines containing that pattern

(Corresponding grep command would be grep <pattern> <file> -n)
