📚 Anyone else miss the Unity era of Ubuntu?
I really loved Unity, and the general design of Ubuntu around 2012-2016.
Unity adopted a number of patterns from macOS, like the global menu and saving titlebar space of maximised apps - it felt polished and innovative.
At the same time, Ubuntu had its own unique and distinctive design - Ambiance and Radiance, along with the Humanity icon set.
Modern Ubuntu still retains some of its old design, but feels less distinctive as software UI trends in general have moved towards minimalism and flat design.
And almost contradictorily, software design in general feels more fragmented - fewer apps are platform-native and more tend to have their own unique UI design rather than blending in.
I know there's the Ubuntu Unity spin and Ambiance/Radiance themes are still available in repositories, but most popular software has still moved on from that era (eg lacking global menu support) - it's not quite the same as it was.
Sidenote: I miss OS X Mavericks for much the same reasons.
