📚 Extending my Dad's desktop another 5-8 years with Linux
I gave my dad an all-in-one PC I had when I was in early highschool to replace his much older desktop computer since my grandmother needed his.
It has always run on Windows 10 without too much issue until the past 2 years. It takes about 3 minutes to boot and then another 5 minutes to fully load in after login. On top of that, the PC isn't eligible for upgrade to Windows 11.
So, with Windows 10 reaching EOL in 2025, I wanted to get ahead of the curve by transitioning my dad to a simple and familiar operating system that would last him much longer.
Linux Mint seemed like the obvious choice, however, I ran into a couple of graphical glitches in the live boot environment after redownloading the ISO twice and even using the Mate DE instead of Cinnamon.
With these issues, I went to my third option before just upgrading some of the hardware: LMDE. Of course, it worked flawlessly. The computer boots up and loads in twice as fast.
My dad was genuinely impressed. This weekend, I'm gonna have him get a feel for it for a day before we go through with the install. I'm very confident that he will like it though.
Amazing stuff like this couldn't be done without the work of the Linux community. Keeping us from having to waste perfectly good, working hardware just because the operating system has become too bloated.
