"What's wrong with these people?"

While chatting with friends, I briefly explained(in a tone trying to be funny) how the alternative desktop to Windows and Mac operates. Few distributions (OS's) innovate, test, and provide a modern and stable desktop for their users. These distributions have the majority of developers/maintainers, and one has the largest company sponsoring them, but they do not have the largest user base or popularity.

The most popular and recommended ones are those that receive all this work done years later, claiming to be more stable and reliable because they have had "years of testing" when, in reality, they have not. Nevertheless, many users, knowing this, choose to use these distributions that claim to be more "stable and reliable" and use them for a while in a "placebo mode" (because they do work up to a certain extent) until they buy new hardware that is only compatible with more modern distributions or takes months/years to become compatible with their "stable and reliable" one. Even though they are aware that they are using the greater effort of those modern distributions, they accept that free software equals taking advantage of others' work instead of free software meaning the ability to contribute.
