🐧 Is there any specific reason why the OS version NEEDS to be specified in apt's sources.list?

Just had that shower thought. Because "Just check if the repo has the current version" seems like it'd work for the overwhelming majority of situations. It should still support being able to specify it (Sometimes you can use a version for an older repo) but otherwise it just seems like chaf to me. Apt knows what mayor version it's on. Let it use that. Would remove busywork from updating across mayor versions.
