Today, I explained SSH keys to a friend on a video call and asked him to send me his public key to add it to my laptop's .ssh/authorized_keys file for access.
When he tried to connect to my laptop, it showed "Connection refused." I knew this happened because the SSH daemon (sshd) wasn't running, so I started it with systemctl and asked him to try again. The connection was established successfully.
A few minutes later, he attempted to browse my home directory, looking for some files. To stop him, I decided to stop the sshd service I had started earlier. After stopping the service and checking the status, it showed: "Stopping OpenSSH daemon. Deactivated successfully. Stopped OpenSSH daemon." I thought the SSH connection would be terminated, but my friend on the call told me, "I can still access your system." Upon checking with netstat, the connection was still established.
So, I want to ask why the session didn’t terminate after stopping sshd. Is this a bug or a feature?
Can someone please explain what exactly is happening?
