Jonathan “Jeb” Miller joins the MariaDB Foundation — Meet the Team
In this episode of our Meet the Team series, Community Advocate Robert Sen speaks with Jonathan “Jeb” Miller, a veteran of more than 20 years in the MySQL ecosystem and one of the earliest QA and performance engineers in the project’s history.
Jeb shares his remarkable journey:
• From refueling aircraft at a naval air station to discovering programming
• From early mainframe work with Sybase and MSSQL
• To joining MySQL as one of the very first QA engineers
• Through the transitions to Sun Microsystems and Oracle
• And finally, to today’s new chapter at the MariaDB Foundation
He discusses the recent downsizing at MySQL, the disappearance of long-standing performance and bug-fixing teams, and why now is the right moment for MariaDB and its community to step forward.
Most importantly, Jeb introduces his vision for an open, transparent benchmarking framework — bringing together tools like Sysbench, HammerDB and others under one consistent workflow. The goal: reproducible, community-driven performance testing that anyone can run, verify, and improve.
This interview offers a rare first-hand perspective on the history of MySQL, the current landscape, and the future we’re building together at the MariaDB Foundation.
