Rotifer v0.6.5: Cross-Binding Proof — How We Validated IR Portability Without Deploying to a Blockchain

Reagiere als Erste:r — dein Feedback zählt!

Rotifer is a protocol where AI capabilities are compiled to portable IR (Intermediate Representation) and can run in any binding environment. That's the theory. v0.6.5 provides the proof.

The Validation Gap

The IR specification states:

IR 1.0 release condition: at least two binding environments pass cross-binding interoperability tests.

We had one binding (Local/Cloud) and zero cross-binding tests. The most critical section of the IR spec — §10, Cross-Binding Interoperability — existed only on paper.

Mock Over Deploy

A full Web3 Binding requires Solidity contracts, Arbitrum deployment, and token economics — months of work. But validating IR portability only requires two environments with different enough constraints. We built Web3MockBinding: same wasmtime engine, but with Gas metering instead of Fuel, 16 MB memory (vs 64 MB), 5-second timeout (vs 30s), and no filesystem access.

RotiferBinding Trait

The key abstraction:

pub trait RotiferBinding: Send + Sync {
    fn binding_id(&self) -> &str;
    fn metering_unit(&self) -> MeteringUnit;
    fn capabilities(&self) -> &BindingCapabilities;
    fn execute_ir(...) -> Result<GeneResult>;
    fn negotiate(&self, requirements: &IrRequirements) -> NegotiationResult;
}

Every binding declares its identity, metering unit (Fuel/Gas/WallClock), available host functions, and resource limits. The existing sandbox became LocalBinding with zero behavior change — all 224 tests passed without modification.

Capability Negotiation

When IR transfers between bindings, a three-outcome negotiation determines compatibility:

  • Compatible — all required resources available
  • PartiallyCompatible — optional functions missing, gene can run degraded
  • Incompatible — required functions or resources missing, transfer rejected

Six typed IncompatibilityReason variants (missing function, memory exceeded, resource exceeded, etc.) provide precise diagnostics.

Results: 9 Tests, 7 Spec Recommendations

We planned 6 cross-binding tests and shipped 9 (adding bidirectional transfer validation). The tests uncovered 7 concrete recommendations for IR 0.2.0, including formalizing Capability Negotiation as an explicit sub-protocol and clarifying compile-time interception vs runtime degradation for extension functions.

What This Unlocks

v0.6.5 is invisible to users — no new commands, no UI. But it's the foundation:

  • v0.7's Hybrid Genes use BindingCapabilities to declare network access requirements
  • A real Web3 Binding implements RotiferBinding directly — no redesign needed
  • The IR spec has validation data to evolve toward 1.0
