256GB Becomes the New Standard as AI Drives Smartphone Storage Jump

AI requirements could push higher smartphone storage in 2026, even as NAND Flash prices rise and supply tightens, and this shift shows how on-device AI now drives hardware decisions more than cost pressures. Manufacturers earlier planned to reduce storage to protect margins, but that approach is changing as AI features need large local storage, and companies now focus on keeping performance consistent while still managing rising component costs. TrendForce says the average smartphone storage capacity will grow by 4.8% in 2026, reversing earlier expectations of a decline, and it links this shift directly to AI expansion across flagship devices. The firm explains that “high-end brands led by Apple and Huawei are expanding AI capabilities through platforms such as Apple Intelligence 2.0 and Huawei’s new HarmonyOS AI,” and adds that “these edge AI models require 40–60 GB of system storage as cache space for local AI processing.” This requirement alone forces brands to increase base storage even if NAND prices remain high. This trend already shows up in recent product decisions, where Apple moved its base iPhone storage from 128 GB to 256 GB, and the company made this change “to ensure sufficient capacity for AI applications and user data,” which reflects how AI workloads now influence baseline configurations. At the same time, Huawei pushes higher capacities like 512 GB for its premium devices, especially to support “offline multimodal AI interactions,” which require consistent local storage rather than relying on cloud processing. Supply constraints are removing low-storage options NAND Flash manufacturers continue upgrading production processes, and this reduces the supply of low-capacity memory, which leads to what TrendForce calls a “passive increase in smartphone storage capacities across the market.” Brands now drop lower-capacity variants because they offer weaker margins, and instead shift focus toward mid-range configurations like 128 GB and 256 GB, while positioning higher storage tiers as premium upgrades. Looking ahead, TrendForce expects that “the 128 GB storage tier may gradually disappear from mainstream Android smartphones by the end of 2026,” and it sees 256 GB becoming the new standard, especially as AI features expand across devices. Premium brands will continue increasing storage faster than the broader market, and iPhones will lead this shift as Apple absorbs higher memory costs while building stronger on-device AI experiences.
