The idea that an organization will “never be hacked” is becoming increasingly unrealistic. Many security teams now operate with an “assumed breach” mindset, planning around the expectation that compromise will eventually happen.

That changes the entire defensive strategy. Instead of relying purely on prevention, organizations prioritize resilience: layered security controls, rapid detection, strong identity management, and protection of critical infrastructure. The focus shifts from stopping every intrusion to minimizing impact, containing threats quickly, and recovering fast when breaches occur.

It also forces organizations to clearly identify their “crown jewels” — the systems and assets that matter most during an attack.
