Why is ChatGPT struggling so hard to make a profit?
Hundreds of millions of people use it every week. OpenAI is generating massive revenue, and it is still losing billions a year.
Here’s what I think is going on.
Look at where the real advertising dollars go online. Some of Google’s biggest advertisers are companies like Booking, Expedia, and Amazon.
Why? Because when you book a hotel or buy a product, you don’t want one perfect answer. You want options.
You want to scroll. Compare prices. See photos. Check reviews. Feel like you made the right decision.
That is how people buy.
And that is where chat struggles.
Ask ChatGPT for the best hotel in Tokyo, and it can give you a smart recommendation. But it doesn’t recreate shopping. It compresses the journey into an answer, when the money is made in the exploration.
Even Walmart tested checkout inside ChatGPT, and the early results reportedly converted three times lower than sending people back to Walmart’s own site. The experience was not fast, relevant, or complete enough.
So here’s the lesson.
The way people interact with your business matters more than most people think.
If your customers need to search, compare, scroll, look at options, and make a confident decision, you have to show up in the places where that actually happens.
