Adding More Memory Suppliers Might Not Fix Apple’s Pricing Woes

Apple's outgoing chief executive recently confirmed what shoppers were beginning to fear. During the company's record-breaking Q3 2026 earnings call, Tim Cook addressed the massive increase in memory component costs that recently forced the brand to raise retail prices. While the technology giant is aggressively seeking new business partners to supply these crucial parts, Cook cautioned that bringing more vendors on board will not automatically bring product prices back down. The company faces a historic jump in component costs Cook described the current situation as a "100-year flood" regarding memory pricing. Artificial intelligence features require huge amounts of advanced, fast memory, driving the cost of these specific chips up at an exponential rate. Apple is currently looking at all available options to secure the supply it needs, noting that the DRAM market is currently dominated by just three main suppliers. When asked if adding more suppliers to the mix would help reverse the recent price hikes, Cook was clear about the reality of the situation. He noted that securing more partners would be excellent for resolving supply chain bottlenecks. However, he admitted that it is completely "unclear" if those new partnerships would translate into savings on the pricing side. Cook actually corrected himself during the call. He initially suggested that more suppliers might help with pricing before quickly walking that statement back, likely to manage expectations. The heavy costs associated with advanced memory components appear to be locked in for the foreseeable future. This means the recent price hikes across the product lineup are likely here to stay.
