Developers are discussing a general resolution proposal to ban all LLM & AI-assisted contributions to Debian and putting it to a vote. What do you think about this development regarding the resolution?

Do you install only flatpaks? Or only native RPM/DEB/etc? Maybe you're religios about it.

Or maybe you don't care and just use what's convenient, which happens to be... what channel usually for you?

Dual booting win/linux for a while now (dedicated ssd per OS). And I need some shared storage so I've been using ntfs for 2 storage ssd's but it's been a huge headache as the linux/win combination constantly corrupts the ntfs file system and I end up with a ton of issues on linux, always having to repair it in windows.

I already do full shutdowns on windows (even started disconnecting the drives from the windows partition manager before shutdown), it doesn't seem to help (i'm suspecting that linux itself corrupts the file system sometimes).

So I'm thinking of switching to using exfat but I've not been able to find much on how feasible that is to use on internal drives. Anyone have any experience with this ?

Of note - the data is not that critical as to warrant a high degree of reliability, but at the same time if exfat presents known issues, same or worse as ntfs, it doesn't make sense to switch.

I want to make the jump to Linux on all of my machines however I worry about my DJ hardware compatibility with software. I have read Mixxx is decent on Linux. I have primarily used Serato for many years and would like something similar with hardware support. Anyone who uses primarily Serato based gear running well on Linux? My main rigs are a DJM-S11 w 2 Rane 12s, a DJM-S9 with 2 Pioneer PLX-1000s and various DJ mixers. Curious if other DJ folks have made the jump and have a stable situation going. Any recommendations on Linux build/dj software to try for maximum stability?

I only discovered this because Louis Rossmann said in a video that he purchased Linux when he was a teenager and then showed the CD. I looked on eBay and I saw a few CDs that were still in their boxes and the labels that were on the box looked like they came from a bookstore, I did not know that these were sold commercially.

My question is, back when they used to sell these CDs in bookstores who was distributing the CDs and where was the money going to when someone made a purchase?

My second question is, if Linux is an open source operating system why would someone want to buy it? I still see some websites to this day selling Linux CDs, I'm really curious where the money is going when someone purchases the CDs.

Windows has middle-click drag autoscroll. On Linux you get it in Firefox, and Chromium has it behind a flag, but nowhere else, which bugged me enough to write a daemon for it.

Hold middle-click and drag, page scrolls that way, faster the further you drag. Release to stop. A plain middle click still pastes and opens links like normal. Diagonal drags do both axes. There's a toggle mode too if you'd rather click once to start it instead of holding.

It works everywhere because it sits at the kernel input layer instead of hooking a toolkit. Grabs each mouse via evdev, re-emits through a per-mouse uinput mirror, injects wheel events during a drag. Nothing above it has to cooperate, so Wayland and X11 both just work. Mirrors copy the source mouse's name and IDs so libinput keeps your per-device pointer speed.

Speed curve is Chromium's actual Windows autoscroll formula, 0.000008 * distance^2.2 px/ms. Tiny drags crawl, big ones fly. Tunable in a config file or a GTK settings window.

Fair warning that it reads every mouse as root, so read it before you run it. It's two small Python files. The systemd unit is sandboxed and I left comments on why the directives I couldn't use would break it.

Badge only shows on KDE Wayland, no flatpak, toggle mode kills middle-click paste. Rest is in the readme.

I am curious if anyone has to deal with the JSIG AC-10 control in their environment. As a reminder, here it is:

AC-10 CONCURRENT SESSION CONTROL Control: The information system limits the number of concurrent sessions for each non-privileged and privileged to maximum of three (3) sessions. Supplemental Guidance: Organizations may define the maximum number of concurrent sessions for information system accounts globally, by account type (e.g., privileged user, non-privileged user, domain, specific application), by account, or a combination. For example, organizations may limit the number of concurrent sessions for system administrators or individuals working in particularly sensitive domains or mission-critical applications. This control addresses concurrent sessions for information system accounts and does not address concurrent sessions by single users via multiple system accounts. This control may require third party software or development of a script. 

I have a solution set up in my environment that tracks how many logons a person does (stored in sqlite3 db). In my pam.d files, I have it check on logon and denies a person from opening more than 3 (ssh, console, xrdp) sessions. It works pretty good although annoying when I want to open a bunch of sessions on patch weekend.

I am starting to question why that might matter. What I would more than likely expect to see is "control how many concurrent sessions per machine there are". This certainly seems to be what RHEL-09-412040 talks about, which is /etc/security/limits.conf "maxlogins". That could help prevent DDOS.

How do you interpret this? How do you meet this control in your environments?

I’m a big fan of an efficient window handling. There are many different philosophies out there on how to do it from the traditional master plus stack window managers to zone based window snapping tools to some auto tiling solution that lives somewhere between those.

Then there is Niri. For anyone who may not know, Niri is a Wayland compositor that takes a new approach to window tiling. By default, it opens windows at 50% of your screen width and tiles them infinitely to the right, allowing you to scroll focus on them by pressing super + arrow keys. Of course you can stack them, rearrange them, toggle full screen, force focused window to take up all remaining space on screen, and it boasts vertical workspaces.

I have been using Niri with Dank Material Shell (DMS) for the last month and now I am not sure I could ever go back to the traditional master + stacked window tiling philosophy. I just tried and it feels awkward, limiting, and cluttered. It even beats more full featured desktop environment tiling options in Gnome and KDE in my opinion because I don’t have to alt + tab to find the window I want to focus on.

If you haven’t given it a try, you should. I didn’t think I would like it very much, but I got used to it after a few days, kept it for a couple of weeks, and now it has become my favorite way to work.

Did anyone in this community watched this video? The creator claims that Linux Mint, along with many LTS Linux distributions, often ships older versions of software, especially default apps like Calendar, Mail, Calculator, etc. He mentions Mint several times throughout the video.

The video is from The Linux Experiment, which seems to be a well-known YouTube channel with nearly half a million subscribers.

I came across this video just before switching from Windows to Linux Mint, and it made me a bit hesitant.

As a regular user, it feels like there's no easy way to know whether we're using the latest and safest versions of these built-in apps. For example, if we connect our Google or Apple Calendar account to an older calendar app, could that create a security risk? The same concern applies to email clients, we don't know if we're using the latest and most secure version.

Most regular users don't have the time or technical knowledge to manually check every application's version or update software outside the normal update process. We generally expect the operating system to keep essential apps secure and up to date.

Am I misunderstanding how Linux Mint and other LTS distributions handle software updates and security? I'd appreciate hearing from people with more experience.

In a batch of software CDs I found at the thrift store long my interest in Linux, I found a previously unarchived version of Fedora. I will be posting it on archive.org as soon as I rip it. I also have a potentially-working copy of PCLinuxOS 2007, but on the computer I tested it on, it kicks me out to a basic shell due to some kind of error. If I can get it to work, I can upload it stand-alone since it only seems to preserved in archives or Linux User magazine and !com magazine cover DVDs (the former or which has a LOT of potentially otherwise-unarchived distro versions)

Most filesystem benchmarks measure throughput on a freshly formatted single device. That is useful, but it misses many of the reasons people choose btrfs, ZFS or bcachefs in the first place.

I built modern-fs-benchmark to examine modern filesystems as complete storage systems, including their features, failure modes and behavior over time.

The current matrix contains 26 configurations across btrfs, ZFS, bcachefs, ext4 and XFS over md/LVM, dm-integrity, native and LUKS encryption, parity layouts, and XFS on a ZFS zvol.

The raw benchmark datasets are published under CC BY 4.0. Every result records the kernel and filesystem tool/module versions. CI artifacts also contain a full command trace, so the exact workload is inspectable rather than hidden behind a chart.

Why I started this project

Many filesystem benchmarks follow a familiar pattern: create a filesystem with mostly default options, mount it, run fio or another generic workload, and compare throughput.

General-purpose suites such as the Phoronix Test Suite are useful for conventional performance comparisons, but they do not focus on the machinery that makes modern copy-on-write filesystems interesting.

I wanted a benchmark designed around btrfs, ZFS and bcachefs as multi-device storage systems rather than treating them as interchangeable replacements for ext4 on a single freshly formatted disk.

That means testing behavior such as:

- Redundancy and degraded operation

- Snapshot aging, scaling and reclamation

- Compression and encryption

- Reflinks and clone divergence

- Fsync tail latency and responsiveness under load

- Rebuild and scrub behavior

- Near-full and hard-ENOSPC behavior

- Data integrity and recovery from corruption

Ext4 and XFS over md, LVM and dm-integrity are included as classic-stack baselines so the costs and benefits of integrated CoW designs can be compared with layered alternatives.

Silent corruption is one particularly important example. When one redundant copy is deliberately corrupted behind the filesystem, checksumming filesystems such as btrfs, ZFS and bcachefs can identify the damaged copy and recover from a valid replica.

Traditional md/LVM redundancy without data checksums can notice during a scrub that its copies disagree, but it cannot determine which one is correct. In my tests, some classic configurations returned corrupted data successfully without an application-visible error.

The dm-integrity configuration shows that a classic layered stack can obtain integrity protection too, with a measurable performance cost.

An important limitation

The main dashboard uses loop devices on GitHub-hosted VMs. Absolute throughput numbers and small differences between filesystems should not be interpreted as hardware rankings.

The hosted runs are primarily useful for:

- Correctness and integrity outcomes

- Comparisons within the same job

- Large behavioral differences

- Snapshot-aging and near-full shapes

- Trends across repeated runs

Real disks are required for meaningful absolute performance, concurrency scaling, device parallelism and mixed-media topologies.

I am aware of this limitation and do not want the hosted dashboard to suggest more precision than the underlying environment can provide.

The real-hardware experiment

Kent Overstreet, the creator of bcachefs, made one of his Hetzner machines available for a real-hardware experiment.

The server had two physical NVMe devices. It completed three full benchmark runs, which are available in the separate real-hardware dashboard. These runs provided meaningful absolute measurements and exposed concurrency behavior that cannot be observed when several loop devices share one virtual disk.

During the fourth run, one NVMe controller entered the kernel’s dead state. The existing machine environment had its operating system on RAID0 across the two NVMe devices, so the hardware failure also made part of /nix/store unreadable and eventually prevented new SSH sessions.

The incomplete fourth run is not being published as benchmark data. This was a failure of the underlying hardware, not a result attributable to any filesystem being tested.

I am grateful to Kent for providing the machine and making the real-hardware experiment possible. Without that access, the three existing hardware runs would not exist.

Where I would like to take it

Better hardware would not merely produce more reliable throughput numbers. It would enable an entirely new class of tests designed for multi-device and multi-tier filesystems.

I would eventually like to run the suite on a machine containing several storage classes, for example two HDDs, two SSDs and an NVMe device.

That could support scenarios such as:

- HDD, SSD and NVMe baselines using identical workloads

- bcachefs foreground and background targets

- ZFS HDD data vdevs with SSD special vdevs

- Separate ZFS L2ARC and SLOG experiments

- LVM dm-cache in writeback and writethrough modes

- Metadata and small-block placement on faster media

- Foreground latency during background migration

- Contention between fast and slow storage tiers

- Degraded operation and rebuild under application load

- Performance before, during and after promoting or evacuating a storage tier

These are the kinds of scenarios for which multi-device and multi-tier filesystems are built, but they cannot be represented honestly when every “device” is a loop file backed by the same cloud disk.

I am considering either renting a suitable dedicated server or eventually building and hosting my own machine. Providers such as Worldstream offer configurations close to what I need, but the recurring cost is currently outside the project’s budget.

For now, the benchmark will remain in its hosted-CI form for an unknown amount of time. The existing dashboard will continue to be useful for correctness, behavioral comparisons and regression tracking, but it cannot answer every real-hardware performance question or model complex mixed-media topologies.

I am also open to running the suite on hardware provided by someone else. A useful environment would need Linux root access, clearly identified block devices that may be wiped, and enough uninterrupted access to complete repeated runs. The hardware description, methodology and resulting data would remain public.

I would appreciate technical feedback:

- Which current tests are misleading or unfair?

- Which failure scenarios are missing?

- Which mixed-media topologies would be most useful?

- Which additional filesystems or layered stacks should be included?

- Which results deserve deeper investigation?

The methodology, implementation and raw results are public. If a filesystem is being tested in a way that misrepresents it, I consider that a bug in the benchmark.

How will libre systems like GNU/Linux handle these?

• It may become impossible to take a "trusted" picture with a GNU/Linux phone or camera.
• It may become impossible to edit a "trusted" picture with GIMP.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on getting a modern mainline Linux stack running on the Nokia Lumia 1520, a 2013 Windows Phone built around Qualcomm’s MSM8974 platform.

This isnt an Android ROM port or a Windows Phone mod. The goal is to bring the device up on a current Linux kernel with postmarketOS and gradually implement the missing hardware support needed to make it usable.

So far, I’ve managed to:

• Build a custom bootloader and device-tree configuration
• Create a postmarketOS device package for the RM-940
• Boot a Linux 6.16-based kernel
• Bring up USB networking
• Establish a stable SSH connection to the phone
• Run an Alpine Linux/postmarketOS userspace
• Begin implementing device-specific power and hardware support

The SSH milestone was a major step because I can now properly inspect the running system, collect logs, test kernel changes, and continue development without relying only on framebuffer output or early boot behavior.

The current challenge is power management.

Full system suspend currently powers down the USB high-speed PHY, but the PHY fails to initialize again when the device resumes. Because USB networking is also the main development connection, this effectively cuts off access to the phone.

For now, I’m treating display blanking and panel power management as a separate, more achievable target while I continue investigating the suspend/resume issue.

There is still a lot missing, and I would not call it a usable daily-driver port yet, but the Lumia 1520 is now booting a modern Linux kernel and running a real userspace more than a decade after the hardware was released. I just wanted to share the work....

I received a ton of negative comments and messages regarding my use of AI. I spent a lot of my time on this and well over did this project abit and english being my secondary language didnt help.
I have gone down this audio rabbit hole in linux and anyone else who has also done it knows how annoying it gets especially with reading the wikis to actual application.

Anyhow I hope it helps someone out there and I will be updating it in the next day or later today as I am currently testing. Version 0.1.2 is available as of right now on GitHub though.

There are too many features to list them out so I added lot of screenshots to help understand.

I've been using PCs since 1998. Around 2000 I started with PCLOS. Because they had the friendliest user forum for noobs. Also back then PCLOS was like the Mint of today. The easiest distro for noobs. I had to buy an external modem to get dialup. And TexStar the creator personally held my hand to get the modem configured.

Back then laptops were outrageously expensive. So I built a desktop. I had removable drawers for the hard drives that I used to clone back & forth. Because I would destroy my W98se installs. I created a PCLOS live CD. I removed both HDD. Booted to PCLOS. I started laughing like crazy because I was using my PC without a HDD! I was gobstruck.

Fast forward to around the present day. I can't remember what year I started using Linux full-time. I'm old & my memory is terrible. I think I lasted around a year then went back to Windows. And the reason I went backwards was so stupid it's shocking. It was because a fast Windows surfing session for me was 1hr-1.5hrs. Where as in Linux it was only 20minutes. I went back to Windows because Linux was too EASY!

Anyways W7 was rock solid for me. After a Vista nightmare I went back to W7. Stayed on W7 till 2023. Then jumped to W11. Since W7 I think I borked 2-3 W installs. That was until W11 25H2. What a POS.

In the last 5 weeks three W11 installs were borked. I blame M$ & 25H2. I know when a bork is my fault. These were not.

I got a new used ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 4 16GB 6th Gen i7 6600 2016. Installed Mint Cinnamon for a few days. It was clunky & froze a couple on the ancient hardware.

I then installed Debian LXQT 13.6. Wow Debian is much easier than 15 years ago. LOL. Everything is snappy except Zoom. My hardware won't run the Zoom app. But Zoom worked ok in a browser. I disabled a few unnecessary auto start services now Zoom & everything runs well.

I have one other primary laptop to install Linux.

I hope I don't go backwards to Windows.

Been mainly using linux for close to 20 years, with occasional windows use for certain software. So I’m just used to it. I’m still using (occasionally) a 2012 Thinkpad t420. Works just fine for what I need it to do, though admittedly modern websites bring it to its limits.

New job has me using a windows thinkpad with teams and outlook and edge and all that. Lord have mercy. 16GB of RAM are always close to full even with my apps only using 3-4GB max. A click or button takes a second or more for anything to happen, the thing runs hot af with me doing nothing but reading a webpage.

It’s so bad. I knew Linux was better before, but I wasn’t aware just how much better. How terribly bloated and worse Windows has become since the XP days. I had no idea.

Every day when I get home I need to briefly touch my own computer, just so I don’t end up hating computers in general.

Wow.

P.S.: and I have to use a bloody mouse again. My arm hurts…

The topic of that particular koan was about macros and code reuse. All I remember is that the neophyte went up to a monk who said some undecipherable string of macros, and the neophyte somehow learned that after a certain point, the more you try to reuse, the more incomprehensible code becomes.

Like many development communities, the kernel community has been struggling to determine how large language models (LLMs) will be used in its development process. The news has been dominated recently by a strongly worded missive from Linus Torvalds on the subject, but the discussion has been rather more wide-ranging and nuanced than that. Topics that have been considered recently include the LLM attribution requirement, code-review tools, dependence on proprietary tools, and whether there is a place for concerns about the ethics of LLMs.

Some developers have alternative from GIMP to create their own version, PhotoGIMP, which has the same interface and shortcuts as Photoshop Now photographers and editors can edit on Linux and save time 🥳

Hey everyobody. I'll start by saying I don't know much about computer stuff and Linux but it's been a year since I've been considering switching to a Linux distro. I just can't stand all the Windows bloatwere and useless features that get my RAM full. The only thing keeping me from totally switching is the samsung's built-in performance mode selector. See, I bought this Galaxy Book 2 Pro SE a year ago and as you may know Samsung has a couple cool features on their laptops; this feature in particular is really useful for the use I do of my laptop, and I couldn't find an answer online about my doubt. I can switch between 4 different performance modes (from No Noise to High Performance) and since that's a Samsung's feature I don't know if that will work if I switch. Do y'all know if there's a way to have this feature on Linux or some equivalent? I don't know if what I'm asking is dumb, thanks for your time anyway!

I got fed up with Spotify not letting me actually own my music and spying on me. I just wanted my media on my disk! Tried a bunch of other terminal players but they were all either bloated to hell or didn't have vim keybinds or had some weird config format instead of just letting me edit a header file's values. None of them felt right so I wrote hum :)

You search YouTube from the TUI (with yt-dlp as the backend), it plays stuff through mpv, and downloads the track to ~/Music/ in the background. Next time you play it it just uses the local file. That's pretty much it! You just use it and your library builds itself.

There's also playlists (they're just text files with .hum extensions), persistent queue, batch downloading YouTube playlists, visual select, filtering, shuffle, etc. Single C file, suckless config.h, and vim keybinds! What else could one want in life?

Those who use davinci resolve on linux definitely know about the issues with AAC and H.264 codecs, drag 'n' drops, and some other bugs. I wonder why nobody has done this before and used bash to manually convert the media, considering how many people were affected by this problem

It works as wrapper that currently:

• Automatically converts unsupported codecs on import
• Fixes broken drag 'n' drops
• Fixes pasting from clipboard

Hey everyone! I've just started my linux journey, and while I tried to make it work with Linux mint, I just felt it was too.."old" to put it more simply, so when I heard of cachy, I decided to try it out, and oh my God! It's so snappy, and it just feels incredible. Are all arch linux based systems like this? If so, maybe once I get some more experience, I'll try arch itself!

Useful if you forget to use pv at all, or, recently, when I ran pv and didn't notice for probably 10-20% of the file that the progress bar was missing. Previously, I've resorted to tricks like

mkfifo pipe pv ... > pipe <pipe restofcommand 

in separate terminals, so that I'd get a useful pv progress bar.

But since the pipeline was this far along, I thought I'd look up that pv --remote option, and found pv --watchfd instead. Should be able to watch anything doing big sequential file reads, not just pv itself!

It is as reliable as QuickShare can be ( well yk how it is. I can't really help it. I don't control the protocol ) and almost as fast as android to android sharing ( there are issues with 5ghz hotspots with some intel wifi cards so I've disabled it for now ).

NOTE: If you're using this, interference with bluetooth devices while turned on is a known bug. I'm working on a fix. So launch the app only when you plan to send/recv

Current Version (V1)

The project currently includes:

• Binary market data parsing
• Level 2 order book
• Strategy + risk checks
• DPDK-based packet processing experiments

Current latency (application-side RX → TX enqueue) is in the sub-microsecond range under the benchmark setup, but I understand this is not true wire-to-wire latency since it doesn't involve a physical DPDK-supported NIC.

What I want to build in V2

I want to move to a real DPDK kernel-bypass architecture using a physical NIC instead of AF_PACKET.

My goals are:

My situation

At the moment I only have an ASUS TUF Gaming A15 laptop running Ubuntu. I don't have a desktop or server.

From what I've read, it seems server NICs like the Intel X520/X710/I350 require PCIe, which laptops generally don't provide.

My questions

1. Is there any practical way to use a real DPDK-supported NIC with only this laptop?
2. Would you recommend moving to a desktop before attempting real kernel bypass?
3. What hardware would you buy if you were starting today on a limited budget?
4. Are there any good open-source examples that demonstrate a complete RX → processing → TX pipeline with DPDK?
5. If you were designing the next version of this project, what features would you prioritize?

I'm building this primarily to learn low-latency systems and HFT infrastructure, so I'd really appreciate any advice, recommended hardware, papers, repositories, or common mistakes to avoid.

It seems like I'm the only one how want to just go to a network share an an application after I login and the files are just there. No having to go mount anything first, what a wasteful step that is. :) So after making a gnome extension for gvfs mounts/shares, I thought it would be great if I could mount other types of storage the same way and even sync data between them. I've been using spotDL for years, and while the CLI is fantastic, I always found myself wishing it had a proper desktop app that actually felt at home on Linux.

So over the last little while I built one.

spotDL GNOME is a Linux-focused fork of spotDL with a native GTK4/libadwaita interface, packaged as a self-contained Flatpak. The goal wasn't to replace the CLI, just to make it easier to use for people who prefer a GUI.

Some of the things it includes:

Huge thanks to the original spotDL developers. Their project does all the heavy lifting. This is simply a native desktop frontend built on top of their excellent engine.

I've been medically retired and now have more free time. As well, I've been daily driving Linux since about 2010. Aside from helping other users in random posts, I have largely been a consumer of Linux.

Over the last few weeks I've seen and read posts leaning towards Linux needing kernel maintainers. While I am not a complete noob, i know I'm not a software engineer.

This leaves me with two questions:

1. What courses or certifications do I need to help maintain the kernel?

2. Is there another way to give back in the meantime?

I'm an incoming accountancy student, I'm not really sure what tools people use besides spreadsheets and stuff, what I'm asking basically is if I can use the same tools or some alternative that still does the job for my course, I can't really give a complete list of the things I need but I want a general guideline for the things I can open and use. fyi I'm not really that tech savvy so I'll maybe go for ubuntu or mint, so I can't really go making my own stuff, at least if there are no tutorials already up; part of the reason for the switch is that my laptop is pretty old so it runs windows 11 pretty slow, even after debloating so if I have to stay on windows I want to know that it's because it's necessary.

Recently we had immutable and atomic, but is there anything in development now that might see staple use in the future? Like the next 5 years or so considering the current state of development, maybe something along the lines of some new fs or idk some revolutionary new wine stuff, or just a paradigm changer like... immutables that changes the way a traditional linux desktop works..................

I made a visual explainer on how copy-on-write works in Linux.

When a 10 GB process calls fork(), Linux does not immediately copy 10 GB of memory. It duplicates the page tables, points both processes at the same physical pages, marks them read-only, and waits for the first write.

The video also covers things like page faults,exec(), Redis snapshots, Android Zygote, lazy zero pages, memory overcommit, COW storms, and some CVEs, etc

Had some free time last week so I made a visual explainer on how eBPF lets Linux run user-loaded code inside the kernel.

It follows a small program through Clang, the bpf() syscall, the verifier, JIT compilation, attach points, maps and ring buffers.

It also covers bpftrace, XDP, BPF LSM, sched_ext, and what happens when the verifier gets it wrong.

Ok, I know we hate AI, but hear me out: as someone pointed out in this comment, AI is rapidly making it pretty easy to overcome the main hurdle to people using linux as their daily driver: oh shit my X doesn't work, now I have to trawl through 30 reddit threads to figure out why and then cling to a 12-page instruction guide for how to fix it and hope I don't screw anything up.

Only I have Claude Code installed in zed with its default project set to my home directory, so I can just fire it up and go 'Hey the left speaker on my headphones doesn't work?' and it can go figure out why and then fix it. And Kibbelz got me to wondering: why don't the major commercialized distros do this? Linux could gain significant desktop share in the user space by just going, 'Here's a text box, type in whatever problem or question you have about your linux install and we'll be happy to figure it out for you'.

Whoever manages to box that experience and polish it properly first will win the distro wars (to the extent that they are wars, and can be won, which is admittedly highly debatable.) Obviously the polish would be important here - needs to be something trained on linux commands, that doesn't have permission by default to rm -rf and such.. but I think it's doable, and could add a lot to linux's desktop share.

Now the reason I'm posting this r/linux is not just to promote the app for Android. I'm doing an experiment. As some of you may know already, I've released before Fred TV for Linux, it uses tauri and rust to deliver a great experience on Desktop. Since the tauri front-end is still a webview at the end of the day, it doesn't deliver the best wayland experience.

So I'm inviting you to try Fred TV Next which should be a lot smoother. It's fully native, no webview. It's essentially the mobile app with a few tweaks. I'll be collecting feedback to see if this is going to be the future of Fred TV. You can grab the .flatpak in the releases and try it out today. The idea is to make one fully convergent IPTV app with shared favorites and sources between devices, and many other features.

Some of you may use old PCs with linux as TV boxes rather than using chinese boxes. I'm all for the eco-friendly nature of re-using old PCs, so here's the thing; you can use Fred TV Next and toggle the 'Force TV Mode' setting. It will give you the same d-pad/tv remote friendly experience as on Android TV, but without the chinese spyware.

EDIT: I'm a honest indie open-source dev making my apps solo, without any AI. I've been programming since 2019 professionally and in my own time. You can inspect my code, build it yourself. This app asks for 0 permissions and uses all the best security standards.

Symptom: cheap USB Bluetooth dongles sold as "CSR 4.0/5.0/5.1/5.3 adapter" (lsusb: 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio) fail to pair, time out on HCI commands, or hci0 gets stuck until unplug/replug. Kernel log shows:

Bluetooth: hci0: CSR: Unbranded CSR clone detected; adding workarounds... Bluetooth: hci0: command 0x0401 tx timeout Bluetooth: hci0: CSR: Couldn't suspend the device for our Barrot 8041a02 receive-issue workaround 

Root cause: these are clone chips (Barrot 8041a02 and similar), not genuine CSR8510 hardware. They respond to some HCI init commands with malformed/incomplete data, and the kernel's existing clone-detection workaround doesn't fully compensate for it — so init either fails outright or the controller gets wedged after a timeout, with no automatic recovery.

Fix: patched btusb to handle these malformed responses correctly during init, fixed a fragile USB power-management suspend path that made things worse, and added automatic recovery (USB reset) on init failure/timeout instead of leaving hci0 dead. Only affects the detected clone code path — genuine CSR hardware is untouched.

Result: adapter initializes and pairs normally instead of needing repeated unplug/replug/reset cycles.

Caveat: this covers the specific failure modes I could reproduce and test against; different clone batches use different chips internally (as pointed out in discussions elsewhere), so it may not cover every single fake CSR8510 variant out there.
