Is it possible for a brand new computer to have malware?

As in, is it possible, for example, for someone to hack into, and build malware into, say Windows, or MacOS, etc, and therefore any and every computer containing that OS would have malware even if it never connected to the internet, or to a thumb drive, etc???

Has that kind of thing ever happened?
