what doe the dot(.) and double dot (..) in linux mean?

hey if you use ls -a command in any directory there is 2 directory . and .. what are those? i did some googling and all i find "they represent the current directory and parent directory" yeah i already know that but the question what exactly are they why they are in every directory? they are marked blue so they are directories, are they like shortcut containing path to current and previous directory? if yes then why they are not a file?
