Why is LibreOffice so widely talked about here? What makes it better than Google Docs?

Genuine question. To my knowledge, the only reason somebody would choose LibreOffice over Docs is if they're writing a book or have an enormous file that they need to edit without lag. In most other cases, Docs seems better because of cloud storage and the ease with which you can collaborate with other people. Also, if I'm going to be editing a document on both my laptop and desktop, I don't want to spend time transferring the files over from one machine to the other.

I'm willing to bet that I'm overlooking something, but I can't imagine what. Thanks for your input.
