So, I decided that it would be a good challenge to write and implement a whole bunch of GUI programs by hand. I've been trying to figure out a worthwhile project for a long time and this seems like the best thing. I have a Pi4 with raspian minimal (basically just the Linux kernel on ARM + X and the standard command line tools) and my goal is to at the end, have a window manager, desktop environment, and graphical versions of basic tools (Text editor, File Browser, etc). So I understand this is a MASSIVE undertaking, and I'm totally fine with that. My question is, where do I begin learning X.org, and where do I even start? I just need a general push in the right direction and I can figure most things out from there. I'm just totally lost on what X actually is (past the basic idea that it displays GUI), how it works, and how to use it for graphical programs.
I might have things completely backwards too, and have no idea what I'm talking about. So anything would be helpful.
