Does installing Linux on external SSD work when inserting in notebook?

I have a very nooby and prob. easy question for you guys. So I bought a new notebook and cannot yet install Linux on it (because I don't know if I return it with the original OS).

So I have seperate NMVE m.2 SSD that I want to install Arch on and I thought of already doing this via an external case that I attach via USB. (I would also already use it, so boot from it if the penalty is not too big.) And later on when I decide to keep the notebook I would like to just swap out the SSDs.

Would that transition work flawlessly? Or is the controller that I connect to (USB vs. NVME (PCIE?)) important? I want to install Arch (for the first time) and so want to take all the time in the world to read the wiki and not redo it again later if it does not work.
