Set color of unused space after xrandr --transform?

I'm experimenting with xrandr, scaling the output down and centering it in a square in the middle of my screen. The border of unused monitor space is black, and I'm wondering if there's a way to change the 'default' color of these undrawn portions of the screen, if that makes sense.
