Many people buy smartphones. Different phone repair shops are selling used smartphones for a good price. I saw many times how the devices has been wiped but i was surprised why they don't use the wipe feature in the recovery. They actually wiped it from the settings (wipe data) not from recovery (in my city).
The recovery is different from phone to phone my phone has for example following features (see the picture)

◾️Reboot to bootloader
◾️Apply update from ADB
◾️Apply update from SD card
◾️Wipe data/factory reset
◾️Wipe cache partition
◾️Mount /system
◾️View recovery logs
◾️Run graphics test
◾️Run locale test
◾️Power off
◾️Lacking storage booting
Reboot system now
Well we all know that if we choose this option, the system reboots.
Reboot to bootloader
If we choose this option then our phone will reboot and load the bootloader.

Apply update from ADB
If you enable this features, then you can install updates via ADB. (ADB(Android Debug Bridge) is a command line tool - very powerful)
Apply update from SD card
As you can probably imagine, this is nothing else than a update from SD card, you can f.e. download Stom ROM Firmwares and install them from SD card.
Wipe data/factory reset
If you want to sell your phone or just delete everything from you phone in few mins, this option can help you. Maybe you should do this several times in a row to overwrite possible data that is recoverable(5-10 times).
Wipe cache partition
Wipe Cache partition is useful if people has problems and this would be a good error fix, you just clear all caches of the partition of your android device(You should do this anyway if you reset the phone with factory reset.).
Mount /system
If you mount /system, it's the same as root because you can change files in the /system. Only mount your system or sometimes /data if you are 100% sure if you know what you are doing!(Usually this option is only available in custom recovery like TWRP or CWM - I don't know why i have this option)
View recovery logs
The recovery logs has been saved on /dev/log and will be removed after every boot. This logfiles will give you errors and much more. (i don't know much about it)
Run graphics test
The graphics test will test the GPU, it is for developers but not for customers like us. If you really want to run it , do it.
Run locale test
Locale is a language so you will test different languages, a rather less important thing.
Power off
Shutdown phone immediately.
Lacking storage booting
This option is used for the case that your storage is full and sometimes if your storage is full you can't boot and then you are in a bootloop. If this happen use this option.
