I have been reading about using a Linux distro to build a custom gateway/firewall/router (not a NAS or file server).
For me, reading and thinking about the topic has been an interesting intellectual exercise. In many of the online articles I have read the authors did not discuss security.
I'd like to hear from those of you who built your own gateway/firewall/router. How big did your tinfoil hat grow? In which design aspects did convenience prevail over security?
I am not interested in the merits of such a project. Just share your experiences and the fun you had or have. Or conversely why you decided your tinfoil hat fit perfectly and backed away from such a project.
