I just read some claims that AMD cards can have some stability problems when using a 4k 60 hz display with hdmi connection. Never encountered this claim before until today. I thought I would post and see if anyone else has heard about…

I just read some claims that AMD cards can have some stability problems when using a 4k 60 hz display with hdmi connection.

Never encountered this claim before until today.

I thought I would post and see if anyone else has heard about this.

Apparently, these cards are POLARIS gen. cards so any in the Polaris line, e.g. rx 560, 570, 580 etc.

There is also some claims that anything over 8 bit display has problems. This is for receiving 4:4:4 10 bit or higher and using a 4k 60 hz tv with an hdmi 2.0 connection.

I know about using a genuine hdmi 2.0 cable.

Why do I care about all this? I am hoping to buy a budget graphics card soon and I am limited to ss, lp cards. Thus, gt 1030 2gb and rx 550 4gb. I can find gt 1030 cards used and the rx 550 4gb cards are expensive Yeston cards from China.

I thought the Amd cards would have better support in Linux with amdgpu drivers until I read about the 4k, 60 hz, hdmi 2.0 issues. Apparently, Nvidia cards don't have those issues at all. The main problem with them is kernel upgrades and XWayland support.

Not working properly with my tv would be a deal breaker. I hope to buy a newer computer eventually but I am stuck with a Dell sff for now. It only has display port output so a dp to hdmi adapter only allows a resolution of 1080p. Hence, the desire to stick a dedicated graphics card in there.

Oh crap, this post is really lengthy now. I hope I still get some replies! :-{
