I've been looking into the possibility of building a distributed shared memory system, where networked hypervisors on a cluster can share their resources and run a linux system on top such that to the linux kernel, it just seems as if it were running on a monstrously powerful machine. Ideally, such a system would present all the CPUs and memory in the cluster to the kernel as a single system, with a flat memory space.
The closest thing I could find for this was a talk in USENIX from 2000, (https://www.usenix.org/legacy/event/usenix09/tech/full_papers/chapman/chapman_html/index.html), and a commercial product from a company called "TidalScale" (https://www.tidalscale.com/product/).
Surely there must be a way to do this with Xen? Has anyone heard of such a solution?
