Moving out of bspwm: what is a good alternative similar to it but with independent workspaces? (not bound to a specific monitor)

Hi all. As title says, after a year and a half of bspwm usage I'd like to look for some alternatives. There are some things that I love about it which are the bsp layout, the IPC mechanism to interact with it, the subscription mechanism, the fact that Tabbed behaves very well with it and the separation between keybindings and main config file.

However, there are also some things that I do not like that much but can deal with (the lack of visual feedback for marked internal nodes) and things that I absolutely do not like (separate workspaces for each monitor).

For the last thing, no matter how I configure it, which community made script i do use, it always feels "too hacky" for me. Now the question is: do all wms act this way? Is there a wm out there which has the concept of "monitors inside a workspace" and not the other way around? This may sound dumb but this is the behaviour of the traditional DEs and I do not exactly know how to explain it. Thank you in advance.
