Why aren't there modern/user friendly bootloaders?

I've messed around with bootloaders in the past when my main machine had multiple OS's on it. But stopped because it caused issues with certain bios functions for some reason. So I removed all but one OS. And now I'm trying to get back into software development and wanted to reinstall Ubuntu. But I'm back to the same issue, needing a grub alternative. But all I'm finding are the same old builds of clover and a couple others like rEFInd. Am I missing something or are there more straightforward options?
