I have been spending some time trying to understand some gaps on some servers that I work with. The machines have 30+ cores (HT) and do around 500.000 context switches per second. My understanding is that this might be quite a lot so I am trying to understand the extra burden that this causes on our systems as the machines spends most of the time at 100%. I am trying now to understand what can be done besides optimising our software and understanding context switching is indeed contributing for how our cpu usage is split (as we also have tons of small processes that lasts for less than 10 ms, and my take is that while those don’t have high cpu usage those might contribute on the context switch metric). I am trying to gather a better understanding on different areas. That is the reason why I am trying to understand how context switches are presented on the top command (if presented at all).
Thanks for your time.
