I would like to install a distro on an old Celeron 400 laptop from 1999; looking at what was available at time there was Suse Linux and Mandrake I believe; which were "period appropriate" but not sure how useful would they be these days though.
Is there a modern distro that run on such old hardware? My main focus is not even a X server, I can do fine with just the terminal environment (although a minimalist windows manager would not hurt), and beside audio and video, the only other thing I need is a working LAN; so drivers may be an issue.
Mint linux seems to be the smallest modern distro available, but I feel like it is too much for a 400 MHz machine... A 40 bucks RPI4 is basically 5 times faster than this machine :D
Is there something modern aimed at old machines?
