Greetings, travelers.

I am occasionally annoyed by the limitations of terminals: <esc> delays due to escape character mechanism, character grid graphical limitation, unusable keymaps (can't think of any off the top, but some keys with mods send the same code or are reserved by the terminal for an ancient reason), etc.

I briefly used a graphical client for neovim. It was shocking to not have these problems. Scrolling was smooth. Graphics were nice. No <esc> delay, so everything felt responsive. I didn't try, but I'm sure I could have mapped practically any modifer+key combo I wanted.

I know about some workarounds like reducing timeoutlen for <esc>, but these are not perfect solutions.

I love the terminal for it's versatility and power, so I will not abandon it for a mouse-driven GUI workflow. I use tools like tmux, lf, neovim, ripgrep, and fd daily. I sleep with my hands on my keyboard, and my mouse(pad) is lava.

Is there a significant way forward here without losing what I love? Would writing my own terminal get me where I want, or are there deeper sources of these limitations? I know nothing about tty except in using ctrl+alt+f_ to swap shells if something goes wrong on boot/login.
