ubuntu: nautilus/dolphin can't create folder. cli can.

I'm lost: I have some NFS mounted directories, and in the top level of those the user can't create directories. neither with dolphin nor with nautilus. the "new folder" option is grey/unavailable. The directory has 777, and in the CLI the user can create a directory without any problems (and obviously without sudo etc).

Any clue what magic powers the CLI has, which the GUI is lacking? Or better: what's wrong with nautilus/dolphin?
