Linux is damned amazing sometimes. (Short story about a PEBKAC)

I've been using Linux since before Ubuntu existed (Red hat was my first foray, followed by freebsd) and I have screwed up installations in some interesting ways in the past, and usually recovered.

Today, I was trying to fix an issue in Ubuntu 23.10 that is making bluetooth audio stuttery on my dell laptop. Through messing with Pipewire and pulseaudio, I managed to get my laptop to reboot to TTY1 instead of the desktop. (Is the GUI still on tty7 these days? )

What really blew my mind is I ran:

sudo apt reinstall ubuntu-desktop

and my desktop appeared without rebooting.

I get that it was able to restart the X server with a proper configuration, but there is still something damned amazing to me about an Operating system being able to hot restart its GUI without a full system restart. It just... worked.
