I am all for moving to Wayland and ditching the aging X, but I have a few issues with Wayland that I need solved/answered.
- The maturity/pace of the development. I know Wayland has been around for years, but still the pace of the development is quick, and seems like they are still working on the groundwork. This is an issue because a) if I write something in one version of wlroots for example, in a month or two I have to rewrite the code because procedures have changed; b) Things like Desktop workspace protocol is still not yet implemented (source: merge-request and waybar module)
- I have to install many different programs to do simple things, like setting a background requires a new program, locking/turning off a monitor requires a new program. Taking a screenshot requires an additional program. It's just a minor inconvenience to keep track and maintain the packages.
- I am multilingual and I use ibus often to write in another language. But I can't get ibus to work on Wayland. All of the google searches refer to the DE to turn on language support, but I don't use any DE and I just want it to work. Same with setting the compose key (
setxkbmap -option compose:ralt). - I am using lightdm as the login manager. I know it doesn't support Wayland natively, but it should be able to launch wayland sessions. But it doesn't work for me. I am using LabWC as the compositor.
I guess the point of this post is to get an idea of when Wayland will be in a stable, usable state. Maybe I missed something and it is more stable than I think it is (many showcases over on r/unixporn). If anyone has answers to point 3 or 4, I would greatly appreciate it!
