I just bought a 10$ broken screen galaxy s9+ with a Snapdragon 845 to use dex mode in it, and it is insanely capable of almost all i want in a basic computer. Which made me think:
Apple M3, Snapdragon X Elite in Windows... Seems like the future of battery-efficient notebooks and mini-PC's is in ARM... They are insanely efficient and cheaper. Despite this, i can't even install Linux minimally decently on a Galaxy Book Go, which is a Notebook i really like for doing basic stuff and streaming (A fact that surprises me because of the cheap price, 4GB ram and running ARM W11)
The only ARM-based device i know that run Linux is these cheap-ass Orange PI's that come mostly with a 2016 old SOC (and android in it so you need to install linux \Armbian]) separately still, and may not even get GPU support). Obviously with a laughable performance; And When they're good, the price is ridiculous and defeats the whole purpose. Raspberry PI's are insanely overpriced now so i won't even talk about it;
Although these devices run poorly, it is because of the hardware (it actually runs the programs), a fact that shows that Linux ARM support is currently decent as of now and capped because of lack of industry interest.
The point is: Why the hell aren't we seeing cheap Notebooks with Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, etc, with decent Rockships, Snapdragons, Dimensity and Allwinners SOC's? Or at least some way to install separately in it without messing up the drivers. That would overthrow Chromebooks \Yeah it's Linux-based, so is android]) and W11 cheap notebooks. All of these ARM mini-PC's we have right now are just for tech enthusiasts. Why aren't we seeing a Mini Mac Linux equivalent for literally 1/10 of the price?
Most people just use internet and basic office things that ARM Linux already has support. What is it that is holding us down? I would love to have a Notebook with a 18h battery and Fedora or Zorin Lite in it. ARM support on Linux seems to be actually better than Windows when it comes to apps that support it natively.
(Keep in mind a live in a third-world country, so my knowledge of pricing could be different. Chromebooks are actually expensive here. Although it would make much more sense to have these cheap devices being sold in countries in development, where people can't buy good expensive Notebooks.
