Adding root user to a group - is it safe?

Been working on implementing something involving IBM MQ server and a client residing on an another Linux-based server.

A quirk in that client requires me to add the Server's root user into the group that IBMMQ created (mqm).

It doesn't seem like a good practice to me, but security-wise - can it introduce new vulnerabilities to the server in any way?
