I know a lot of people mock or make fun of phrases like "This is the year of Linux" or "2024 is the year of Linux", but I literally think that the 2020s IS the decade of Linux, and here's why: Gaming.
Let's be honest, if you're not using a computer for work, archiving, developing, or passion projects, you're using a computer for entertainment. One of the most popular forms of entertainment is gaming.
The efforts of Valve/Steam, the development of WINE, the community effort of making the desktop experience better, and making drivers better, we should be expecting a lot more Linux users down the line, possibly more than ever.
With concepts, products, and changes such as:
- Steamdeck
- Raspberry PI and retro gaming
- Companies creating a business out of selling retro gaming handhelds
- Most closed-source services are playing around with subscription models with their core OS or Office utilities and features.
- A stronger drive for privacy
Most people might not realize that what they're gaming on runs on Linux, and that's fine. But I think Linux is on its way to become mainstream again, and can easily be in peoples' homes without them knowing it. The Linux experience is getting better, and upstart companies (especially in gaming) are definitely striking into this opportunity.
