Bootable usb drive not recognized by mac

So I'm trying to install Linux on my MacBook pro. It's a 2020 model with the Intel chip.

I've seen countless sources recommend Balena Etcher to create a bootable usb drive to install Linux that way. But no matter how many times I try, my mac will not recognize it after I restart and try booting it up after holding option upon restart.

After I use Etcher to make my bootable usb, if I open Disk Utility and find the usb drive, when I open Get Info and scroll down to where it says "Bootable" my drive says no. How can I fix this issue? I'd like to be able to dual boot Linux instead of running it on a vm.

Also, I have tried with two different download versions from Ubuntu. I've redownloaded the same Ubuntu iso 3 times and tried creating a bootable usb each time and still doesn't work.

Anyone else encounter and overcome this issue?
